Why do they want frame bars? Perhaps for their Clearly Contacts B&M stores?

SANTA FE SPRINGS, Calif.— Essilor announced yesterday that it has acquired iCoat, an independent prescription laboratory based here that specializes in the development and licensed sale of thin-film deposit and coating technologies for premium optical equipment. The announcement was issued as part of Essilor’s first quarter 2014 financial results.

iCoat generates around $26 million in annual revenue, primarily through optical chains and eyecare insurance companies in North America, according to Essilor. The lab’s current management team, including its founder Arman Bernardi, PhD, who serves as president and CEO, remains in place.

iCoat is known for its extensive research and development capabilities which have produced proprietary products such as Stainless AR, a superoleophobic, anti-reflective coating. - See more at: http://www.visionmonday.com/latest-n....gUmNcXH3.dpuf

In the early to mid 90's my contact with ICoat was Jack Jue for compatibility and quality evaluations of Transitions lens products. I believe he was a founder too. I know he retired a while ago, I hope he is doing well.

Jim ................Congratulations for your new job. I hope you really enjoy it.

I also remember Jack Jue with whom we worked a lot in the mid 1980s. They were a really progressive company.

It is with sadness that I announce the acquisition by Essilor of QC Optical Labs of Spokane WA and Portland OR. The labs both will be closed within 2 weeks.

It won't stop until some people stop drinking the "E" cool aid. Maybe when they are paying $96 for Ar that has more bells and whistles then even their own rep can explain without laughing, some will get it. Right now, fewer get it than ever.

Give me bells and whistles because I can think I am Optician when really I am a frame stylist with PD stick and marking pen.

I was an Essilor employee for some years, then I went back to private practice. The Dr. used the same Essilor Lab I worked at. As the Dispensing Optician there I decided to switch to Hoya Labs and what a great experience our patients and our practice is having. We've been contacted by essilors brand rep, account rep, lab reps you name it. I have helped Hoya rep land a few choice accounts and they are happy with the change. We can turn things around if we support others labs. Many years ago I grew up in a small lab atmosphere and we did very well until insurance came to be. Now it seems Essilor is buying or making big deals with them too, but there are ways around that too.

Essilor Acquires Russian Lens Lab and Distributor:

    http://www.visionmonday.com/latest-n...distributor-1/

CHARENTON-LE-PONT, France— Essilor International (Reuters: ESSI.PA) reported Friday that it has acquired a majority stake in Company Grand Vision, a major distributor of ophthalmic lenses and contact lenses in Russia that generates annual revenue of around €29 million. Company Grand Vision will continue to be led by its current management team and will help to strengthen Essilor’s multi-network strategy in Russia, where the Essilor and BBGR brands have been on the market for several years. - See more at: http://www.visionmonday.com/latest-n....WemvHl5B.dpuf

    According the Optical Vision Site:

"Eyewear marketer and Essilor subsidiary FGX International has acquired Surrey-based Three Hundred, which trades as Fabris Lane. The deal also includes Three Hundred’s growing online retail operation Red Hot Sunglasses. Terms were not disclosed."

I have a sort of general question:

As owners/management higher-ups in independent optical businesses, do any of you feel threatened by Essilor? It's amazing to read this thread from beginning to end (It started somewhere around 2010, I believe). It doesn't seem like they're acquiring great new product by purchasing these businesses. It more looks like they are just trying to obliterate any competition they might have, without end.

I think what I am trying to say is that if you are a good business, and really are able to maintain yourself on a model that makes you successful, I can't see how Essilor could get their hands on you. I am naive, as I've only been in this business for two and a half years now. But I have worked both in a super corporate environment, and in an independent, and it honestly feels like two different businesses, despite the product which binds. But even then, the product is so different, and various.

P.S. It does seem like a good portion of the acquisitions hanker on a changing of hands of the business, like the owners are hitting retirement age and passing their business along to Essilor, possibly because they know not who else they can give it over to.

Why didn't anyone mention this one from last year.....
    http://www.essilor.com/en/Press/News...nsitions_A.pdf

So basically if it's a optical related commercial, then it's Essilor.

Maybe because it was pretty much discussed a couple of pages back on this thread and was accepted as a formality.

essilor also makes it's own finishing, dispensing, and exam equipment - essilor instruments

    Luxottica now has Michael Kors
    other frame lines missing:
    - Prada
    - Third Culture
    - Eyewear essentials
    - D&G

Don't forget about eye exam of california(largest OD employer in CA)

    For VSP Global
    - Unity should be a separate lens division, as they can exist without VSPone(i.e. plexus FSV Unity, independent labs that process unity products)
