    Confused Y Stick ???

Has anyone ever heard of the "Y Stick"? It's some measuring device to aid in taking the fitting height on progressice lenses. It snaps onto the frame like a clip on sun of sorts. I want to know if anyone has heard of or uses this thing. I was at an optometry practice and the Dr. acted like I was from Mars because I had not heard of this thing? I was a dispensing optician for 13 years. Tell me what you know.....

It is a nice tool to ensure the seg hts are correct. The cost is high, but the client also thinks it is a "cool" toy and it does work well. We have had them for years.

    For your edification: http://y-stick.com/frame_news.html

I believe there is now a Y-Stick 2 model as well. They've been out for a while now, a couple of years at least. I've seen and tried out one. It's ok I guess, kind of gives the patient a good feeling that you're using the latest thing (not always necessarily the best thing) to measure their seg ht. It's not really any more or less accurate than any other method, since all of them rely on the optican's skill and knowledge.
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.
