    Office Pranks

Any of you ever pull pranks?

We have a guy who took four weeks off for his honeymoon. We are planning a few with him:

    - Stapler in jello
    - Leaving 30 messages on his voice mail. With him being gone for a month, he left his out of office reply to say so. So he is probably not expecting a lot. He comes back and there are 30 voice mail messages, he will have a mini heart attack
    - Replace his old keyboard with an old broken one. Why? Well then you plant some cat grass in the keyboard and two weeks later there is grass growing.
    - Take his photo of him and his wife and photoshop my face over it.

    Any things you have tried?

ahh, for one person's last day, we filled her cubicle with balloons. We then covered every item with saran wrap. Thanks for reminding me.

Had a teacher that always stomped on the paper in his wastebasket. Filled it with water, put Saran wrap over it and piled the paper on top. When he stepped in it - class detention, but soooo worth it. He never did it again.

Ya gotta be real careful these days. There is a fine line seperating "pranks" from "harrasment" and a prudent employer will take a dim view of any shenannigans or monkey business in the workplace.

We have a very benign running prank in our office. We've got a couple rubber pests that will show up in random places: a small tree frog in the bathroom sink (I actually thought, "how did a frog get in the sink?!?), a little snake tucked in the paper towel dispenser (that one totally got me), and a somewhat realistic-looking rat in the microwave (I thought of that one, but I wasn't around to see who discovered it). There's a rule, though: no fake scorpions or spiders, since we have a real problem with them!
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

Years ago, before PC ruined it all we had (I hate to admit this) a rubber pencil eraser top shaped like a little penis. It would show up occasionally on someone's pen or pencil or perhaps in the cash drawer. Once it had a tiny condom on it. No one took offense because in those days people still had a sense of humor.

Very true. In our situation, we know who we are doing it to, and more specifically, know who we should not do it too. Plus, all of our stuff is pretty light. Our bosses love us anyway, because our output is incredible.

One time in my old office they filled all my drawers with packing peanuts. Of course they left everything in them so I had to dig thru to find what I needed. I was finding packing peanuts for months.

We have one computer in the break "room" that has Kyodai Mahjongg installed on it so they can play during breaks. One guy is really good and fast - can clear an entire Mahjongg Turtle formation in three minutes. So he occupies the entire leaderboard. I however, know how to modify the HOF.ini file that contains the high scores. So I go in there and put my name at the top just a few seconds ahead of his. He goes and reclaims the top spot, I appear just ahead of him. This went on for quite some time until I finally put my name in at the top with a clear time of 35 seconds!!!! Then he knew something was up.

These are goods pranks! In our office, we have a colleague; we glued his cup to the coffee saucer, and then to the table, and we bonded chips to a plate using super glue. So, when he wanted to take some chips or drink coffee, you can imagine what happened.

I liked the old grease pencil over the lensmeter eyepiece trick.
Or stick a low power prism chip in the lensmeter

I had a guy troubleshooting the generator for an hour once trying to figure out why there was 2 diopters of prism in every job.

I remember another prank. We have another colleague who loves flowers and one day he has brought two pots in which to plant two kinds of garden flowers. Every day he took care of them and he was very anxious to see them coming out of the ground (in two weeks the seeds had to germinate). One morning we replaced one pot with another where we put an onion bulb. So, when the flowers emerged, our colleague was very disappointed, but he consumed the onion at least :)

The nastiest (and thus absolute funniest) I was ever a part of was when I was at lenscrafters, about 14 years ago. It was April Fools. We ran fishing line from the front gate through all of the frames on the first 5~6 frame boards the night before. Gate goes up, frames go flying.

Also, anyone foolish enough to leave their car keys out was liable to have their car "relocated" in the Mall parking lot. If anyone is familiar with Tyson's Corner Mall in Fairfax VA, well, you know how hard it can be to find your car among 5 different 4 level parking garages :)
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.

    That is brilliant.

    That is cruel.

I started with step 1. We took my picture and put it over his wife's. I wonder how long it will take him to notice.

Just doing a test of the stapler in jello. His first day back is Monday, so it will be waiting for him.

    We also:

    - Left 20 messages on his phone
    - Taped his phone down
    - Put a sign on his wall that says "Don't forget. You will be here FOREVER." Ala the Simpsons when Mr. Burns put that on his desk
    - Put tape under his mouse, so when he goes to use it, it will not work
    - Photoshopped my face over his wife's face in their portrait.

I am going in 8am on Monday to set it up. I will be hiding around the corner ready to tape it on video as he comes in.

Did you ever send someone into the store room to look for the box of optical centers?

Yeah, two things I was concerned about. First, how do you make it float? I read that if you tie it with dental floss and then pull the floss over and tie it under the container, it will suspend it. I find that really painful. Instead, I realized that once I tied a couple strains of floss around it, if I held it up, it floated. So I took a knife and was able to put it through the loops and the knife was long enough to not fall in the tupperwear.

But then my next concern was how to get the jello out. I heard if you lightly grease the container, it will come out. During a test run, it didn't. I even used a knife on the sides and it just fell apart. When I did it for good, I greased the container, but at the office, I held it in warm water for a couple of minutes. Then I ran the knife along the edges, flipped it over, and it came out.

I'll put a couple posts on the pranks we've pulled on our manager. He's a great sport! #1. While on vacation, the mainainence man took out the manager's desk to replace it with a new one. We told him to hold off on putting the new desk in his office. When the manager got back, he was welcomed to a toddler's playskool desk and chair with his phone on the desk!

Post #2. The next time our manager went on vacation, we taped a garbage bag to the window of his office and stuffed it with shredded paper from the office shredder. We then taped shredded paper around the door frame, so when it was closed, it looked as though his office was completely stuffed with paper, and was sticking out the sides. To finish off the effect, we filled a box with books, put it inside his office, and then used a string to pull it tight up against the door, so he couldn't open his door. We also left shredded paper on the floor outside his office for effect. When he saw the paper against his window, he had doubts that we actually filled his office with paper, but the hard to open door made him think twice!
