We call them banana spiders here, but they're really a golden orb weaver. They've got the strongest, stickiest web I've had the mis-fortune to walk into. But it's cool to watch them make one. They lay down a zig-zag pattern in the center after they've weaved the main web.

note* If you go 4 wheeling down here, always let someone ride in front of you. They love to put a web in a trail opening. It's hilarious to watch someone freak trying to get the web off them! :bbg:

I've heard them called 'writing spiders' in North Carolina. I hate all spiders!

We get the fast moving big (about 2" including legs) jumping brown spiders with two black racing stripes down their back.

Great...thanks alot DragonLensmanWV!!! I've got the creepy-crawlies now....**slapping arms and legs**....I feel like spiders are all over me!

I'll never forget the time we were shopping at an outdoor fruit and vegie stand in Kiawah that had these little rooms with low ceilings...I walked into one of the rooms and on my way out, my hair went right through a web (yes, my hair was mighty big and bouffant-y! :bbg:)....long story short, as I was walking around, I felt "something" in my hair, so I swatted at it, then it landed on my neck (that's when I felt the legs) and I flicked it to the ground....when it landed, I HEARD IT RUN THROUGH THE STONES!!!!!!! Oh, brother...I thought I would faint, right there...the lady next to me stared at me like a deer in headlights and said "whoa, did you get a look at the size of that thing?" Ok, enough...anybody have a paper bag??? I'm hyperventilating over here!! :bbg:

Indeed, the skin starts itching me, only when I see a spider (even on its web :) ) . You can imagine how would I do if I would have one of these on my skin? OMG

I know what you mean. I don't think there is anything that creeps me out more than spiders! They make my "skin crawl."

For me, the rats or the mice give me a similar feeling. Sometimes, my boy is telling me that they are so little and I am so big (and he is right), but I can't control my feelings.

I agree with FVCCHRIS, only a dead spider is a good spider.

I believe it's called a Wolf Spider - might look it up on the internet.

dwbport, I don't think it's a Wolf Spider. Even if I don't like the spiders in general, I was looking on the Wikipedia and it seems that they are looking different.

No, I don't think it is a wolf spider, I think it is a banana spider. Now, my daughter seems to have a family of them living on her deck :( They spin such strong and neat-looking webs, which is common for Banana Spiders, from what I read on Wiki. Her kids begged her not to destroy the webs or the critters. But, I think she is going to have to. There are several of them and they seem to have inhabited various places on her deck! YIKES!

Ineed Chocolate, your grandchildren look like my children, who love all insects and try to protect them all also (even those which scare them :) ).
