    XL and Percepta Discontinued

I've had a few ask so I confirmed with my contact at CZV this morning that the SOLA XL and Percepta (except in hard resin polarized) will be discontinued as of April 30th.

So sad. I used to work for LC in the 1980s, and it was soooo fun listening to the complaints about the XL (e.g.: "I can only read three words wide on this card.") The Percepta was an interesting concept with three different designs -- one for emmetropes, one for myopes, and one for hyperopes.

My boss just dumped a (heavy) box in my lap and asked if we could use these lenses.....

They are G-15 Glass Sola XL's........
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.

My very first day on the job for Sola was the 1987 Sales Meeting in which we prepared for the launch of XL. It's amazing it's lasted this long.

I had a free coupon for the Sola XL Gold. It had no expiration date and I had it for years. A friend needed glasses and didn't have much money and I gave it to her. This was maybe 5 or 6 years ago and she did just fine with them.

I also worked with a man about 10 years ago that loved that lens and used it on almost every progressive patient. I've never worn it but it seemed to work okay except the reading area was a little small.

Never liked the Percepta. I used the VIP more than the XL

I dispensed hundreds of those old lenses... and spent hours warning a patient before they went out the door what nightmare they would expect....

I am glad to see them go... I hated the XL, VIP and Percepta. Crappy lenses in my opinion... back when we had a 18% progressive non-adapt rate. I think it would have been higher but we had nothing else to offer then. Now, I recommend only digital and have less than a 1% non-adapt rate.
