Ever wonder why the leaders of the opticians' associations don't really seem to oppose de-regulation of opticianry? Perhaps their businesses are in an opportune situation to provide refraction or they actually own shares in a company that provides refraction to optical stores. Short term benefit only.

Ever wonder why optometrists are quick to trash every other organization while at the same time they have been deregulated

"...The provincial government is putting patients at risk for serious health complications by deregulating optometry and allowing opticians to prescribe eyewear without testing for eye disease, the B.C. Association of Optometrists warned Thursday."

Or could it be their balance sheet ? I was curious recently to compare my office cost to 2 patients for Acuvue 1 day and 2 week lenses versus Coastal Contacts. in fact one patient who had purchased 1 day lenses from my in the past, showed me an internet advertisment from the company - the patient's friend told her to purchase it from them but she did not know the BC of the lenses. I was quite surprised to find that the cost I offered my patient for the 1 day lenses was only a couple of dollars more and the other patient's 2 week lenses were less than 10 dollars difference. in fact the patient could have purchased them cheaper from places like Walmart. So I am not sure how many patient's, as far as contacts are concerned, are purchasing from the company.

They don't have to be cheaper (in fact they are more expensive then our practice), they just have to have their perception that they're cheaper and more convient. Plus it helps if they don't require an Rx or proof of recent exam..

Oedema, Not sure about patients in BC, but many of mine in ON compare the price on the internet, Walmart, etc., and look at what we charge. The last time I remember patients paying more was by accident with companies such as 1-800-Contacts, cost with shipping and duty sometimes raised the price significantly. So I am not sure how many patients would deliberatley pay more than the office cost as they already have memorized our cost. Just a thought.

Usually the patient already has made up their mind before coming in that they are going to buy online because of the perception there is significant savings and are often not willing to listen to their ECP claiming there is really no significant savings, if any at all.

My good sources tell me that the feds are aware of this issue and are investigating possible contraventions in federal law. If I was the Minister, I would looking over my shoulder. Even though the feds would rather not mess in provincial legislative matters, if there is a blatant disregard of adherence to federal law, they will intervene.

If I had to take my pick, I would choose Great Glasses as the greater evil over Coastal Contacts

    Blue Jumper

    From The Canadian Press, April 15, 2010 - 4:00 p.m.

In its most recent quarter, Coastal's earnings fell to $750,000, or a penny per share, a decrease from $968,000, or two cents per share, in the fourth quarter of 2008.
Sales lifted 15 per cent to $35.9 million from $31.3 million, partly driven by a 180 per cent surge in the sale of eyeglasses.
