    Wave How Artistic Are You??

A couple of weeks ago I went to the ROATX Convention here in Arlington, Texas. That Saturday Evening they had a dinner and there was a Jazz Band. After Dinner the room cleared out of folks wanting to go to the Hoya suite in the hotel. As the Jazz Band played Dr. Mcdonald " Yes Our Own WM McDonald " took to the stage and sang his heart out. Not many people here know he used to be a member of a group called the Embers taht made a few hits that played on the radio. This man can sing, after he was through my friends coaxed me to the stage and I sang as well. Afterwords, Dr. McDonald and I spoke and I told him that through my career I have known alot of Opticains and Lab Techs who where musically or artistically talented. This made me want to start a thread to see who on optiboard may have this gift. Please share.

    Thanks Ginny:o

Someone should call Cousin Robert Shanbaum and tell him of this thread. If memory serves he is an excellent musician. OK I'll do it!

In fact, Robert rocked out at the EyeRock concert in NYC at VEE... I think I saw a link, will post here next...

I can't sing to save my life, however, I am a heck-of-a-back-up-dancer...especially for the Docs of Rock, the Bad Habits. Robert Palmer Girls, look out!

Used to play uilleann bagpipes, and had a number of gigs with The Chieftains over the years, Gaelic storm, The Young Dubliners and various and sundry pipers/Irish musicians when they've been in town. Also played with Stonecircle and The Rusted Reel here in SLC and around the west for a number of years.

Now I'm just a recovering bagpiper.

Hi Laurie, Harry, yes, I'm here (now), and that is my son Steve's YouTube page - he recorded some of the songs performed at Eye Rock and posted them there. Hopefully we're going to see some higher quality recordings at some point, but these weren't too bad.

It seems that there are a lot of optico-musicians around! I wonder if there aren't in fact lots of musicians in most industries; it's really too bad that it's so hard to make a go of it in music, where it's feast or famine, but mostly famine, I think.

it's true, opticians always complain about how little money they make, but try being in a band, touring in a broken down van, making $75.00 a show. HAH

Wow, this is so cool, Im glad everyone is responding this this thread so well, In working through the years in this field I have come across many musicians, especially lab people, I think the craftmanship of fabricationg a pair of glasses is enjoyed by most people who are artistic in other areas of there lifes like music or the arts. Keep them coming

Dr. McDonald has my respect way beyond that of his optical knowlege. I remember when I was taking a class from him shortly after 9/11 when he insisted on taking 5 min from class to observe the flag raising salute and playing of the national anthem at our hotel. It was very apparent to me he was more of a man than we usually experience from this industry.

On another Note (no musical notes on my keyboard) I've tried a few musical instruments but would only ebarass myself if I tried to play in front of folks. However, on the arts side I started a weekend gig (www.sawptician.com) two years ago which has been very enjoyable.

Kevin, that is awesome! When my ship comes in, I'll commission another of the golfing bears for my husband. He loves his golf and his "handle" as a Naval Aviator was "Bear". It would be perfect for a significant birthday.

    Hi Judy,
The golfing bear is one of my hot sellers this time of year and I'd be happy to make you one. Incidently, I'm about 25 miles Northeast of the Luzurne Lab.
