You are an ophthalmologist. Surely your professional journals contain plenty of websites where you could glean this information. Have you tried looking there? Good Luck!

There are several possible types of multifocal IOLs. The ReSTOR lens from AcrySof, for instance, relies on a central region of diffractive optics that provides near vision focus and an outer ring of refractive power that provides distance vision focus.

The diffractive optics are "apodized" or tapered toward the outer ring of distance power in order to provide distance, intermediate, and near vision. Essentially, a caustic-like focus is produced, similar to the focus produced by spherical aberration, which has the effect of increasing the depth of focus of the eye.

You can learn more about diffractive optics technology from any good books on optics as well as from many online resources (e.g., www.wikipedia.org). Often, the IOL manufacturers will also have technical details available for their products, so you may want to contact them as well. Otherwise, you may want to track down a textbook or journal article in clinical ophthalmology that presents a survey of multifocal IOLs.

Umm how the heck do you get to be an MD and not know how the heck IOL's work? Even my opticians get it and they have never been on the medical side of any office. He can't even spell scientific. I am so scared.

    Two general catgories:

    1. Accommodating IOLs that have flexible haptics
    Crystalens http://www.crystalens.com/

    2. Simultaneous vision IOLs that sit in the bag in a traditional fashion. These use concentric or aspheric optics.

    Rezoom http://www.rezoomiol.com/

Try looking at online refractive journals, such as:
    PCON supersite http://www.pconsupersite.com/

These are "premium" IOLs, and I would say virtually "experimental" when it comes to patient satisfaction. I would not get too excited about them, just yet.
