    Trivex vs 1.67

Has anyone read anything about 1.67 supposedly being better than trivex for semi-rimless and drill mounts?
My boss brought me an article that said this, but I've misplaced it before I could read it.

    Any thoughts would be great.

Your boss is correct unless you want thin, durable and good optics then the only option would be 1.60 and 1.70

1.67 good for drill, thin but compromised optics
Trivex Good for drill, good optics but Cr-39 thick.

1.60 I drill at 1.5et with zero breakages or returns, it has good optics and is a hi-index.

I'd give the nod to Trivex. It's the only material I have seen that hasn't come back cracked, chipped or split.

We have never had a cracked Trivex drill. Even when run over by a semi. While it does have excellent optics, it is not as thin as others mentioned. But, you don't have to add any thickness to it and it will always be lighter weight than anything else. Harder to polish the edge, but who needs anything more than a satin polish anyway?

REALLY? You need to talk to the women in my neighborhood a 7070 edge polish is not good enough for them and when I pin bevel I better make sure the pinbevel is poished too, so I broke down and purchsed....

We use trivex for all work possible and go to 1.67 on 10% with the rest in 1.74......

We drill all of it and only have a problem with the 1.74 if it is surfaced, the stock lens works great for drills.

    These are two different animals.

First, let's say that you are using 1.67 with mr-10 additive, that's a great lens, and is generally what we use for the "thinnest" lenses available.

Trivex is a great combination of light weight, thickness, and indestructibility. If you want to try something cool, drill your next Trivex silhouette with a small bit 1.0 to 1.15 diameter. Don't use bushings - just squeeze it right into the undersized hole. It's pretty cool, just leaves you limited on remounting options...

Both materials are great for their own purposes, a lot just depends on pricing and distribution of either.

Why pay for all that fancy AR just to introduce more reflections from the edge?

And BTW, I have the dual-spindle model of that one.:D

Anyone want one of those huge-a$$ Coburn automatic polishers?

    Thanks

All Right, Thanks guys. I think we will try the 1.60 idea because he likes the idea of increasing our bottom line. But I still think I like the idea of trivex better overall.

I have my son iin a semi rimless 1.67 and it is chipped all to heck. but maybe is has gotten better.

I just got an order of one lens in an Airlock frame back from a lab on which I ordered a polish and got unpolished. I didn't want to wait five days, so I used my dual-spindle polishing wheel. It takes forever to give Trivex a high-luster polish that way.

MR-10 1.67 drills beautifully. I've never seen one chip, crack, or craze. I've wore Seiko's for years.

MR-7 1.67 does not do so well.

For those who are curious, HR-74 1.74 drills very nicely as well.

Our lab drills 1.67 as our first choice, Trivex second. We'll be happy to do either, but if someone asks, I recommend 1.67 first.

I've never had a problem with Trivex either, but it does wear on the drill bit faster.

Here's a good thread on the different MR's:
