Silicone hydrogel contact lenses have caught on with both wearers and eye care practitioners. By 2009, silicone hydrogel lenses are expected to account for 60 percent of U.S. soft contact lens sales (in dollars), according to equity research firm Robert W. Baird & Co.

Jason Nichols (The Ohio State University, USA) and Philip Morgan (Eurolens Research, The University of Manchester, UK) provided an overview of the 2009 contact lens market in the USA. Results of an annual survey indicate that silicone hydrogel lenses account for 54% of fits in the United States. Soft toric lenses account for 22% of fits, 30% of which are silicone hydrogel toric lenses. In the United States, silicone hydrogels are the most commonly prescribed material for new soft fits, compared to worldwide trends indicating that most patients are still wearing conventional soft lenses (49%) for daily wear, instead of silicone hydrogels (18%). Silicone hydrogel daily wear accounts for 22% of fits in the UK, 15% in Japan, 23% in the Netherlands, 8% in Hong Kong, and 36% of fits in Australia.

The current brands of silicone hydrogel lenses available, in order of highest oxygen transmissibility to lowest:

    • Focus Night & Day by Ciba
    • Air Optix Aqua by Ciba (enhances comfort for people who wear lenses daily)
    • Biofinity by Coopervision
    • Acuvue Oasys by Vistakon (designed to be more wettable than the others, beneficial for people who have dry eyes)
    • PureVision by Bausch and Lomb
    • Acuvue Advance by Vistakon

There are also two toric (astigmatism correcting) silicone hydrogel lenses on the market:

    • PureVision Toric by Bausch
    • Acuvue Advance for Astigmatism

I retrieved the data (above) by using Google to search for the phrase "silicone hydrogel".

I used the advanced search option:

The contact lens world is changing fast! According to the experts, in the next few years silicone-hydrogel lenses will dominate the industry. The differences between rigid and soft lenses is blurring as advances in polymer chemistry bring these materials closer together . . .

This data is not correct regarding the dK order of contact lenses. Biofinity is higher than Air Optix, and may be higher than night and day.

There currently are more silicone hydrogel lenses available today then mentioned in the article as well...
