I sell readers of all sorts, actually its been a great leader to get people in the shop. As an ECP I'm picky about the product, but as a business man I have to do whats working. So I dont go for the supper cheap stuff I could get (Can you say $6.00 for a dozen?) but I'm not going to pass up a new customer, more often than not its allowed me to help them with their Rx product going forward. If not, well people buy 3-5 pairs of OTC readers annually.

I agree with Harry. Occasionally you get patients with same or close-to-same Rx in both eyes that ask if OTC readers will be bad for them. If they are not contraindicated, I think we should let them know it's an option. To not give patients the option of magnifiers makes an OD seem like that OD was more interested in eyeglass sales than the exam.
Sometimes those magnifiers are in the patients best interest.
Have you seen these new Dr. Scholl's orthodic support machines in some of the drugstores? Apparantly you get down to your stocking feet and the computer "measures" your foot and then pops out a lot # for the right shoe orthodic to buy....I'll bet podiatristS just HATE them!
So now what we have is a bunch of people walking around with limps and headaches because they fixed it themselves.
