    Time to move on?

I have been employed by an ophthalmology practice for many years and the main OMD is ready to retire leaving two others there. Its a matter of time as politics at this office are heavy. It is time to move on in my heart. I have about a years worth of savings for this rainy day yet I am scared. My brother owns 3 stores an is willing to let one go that is open in a popular market yet their numbers are good. This store is only open 3 days. It sells from mid end to high end stuff which is crazy for its location. I can sell and have work that store a dozen time yet I am hesitant to change. I have somewhat good credentials (ABOC, NCLC, COT and Licensed-Board Certified Optician). I specialized in contact lenses for many years and I am use to manage people as well as perform all kinds of fits. Going from there to a solo (one man) store seems like a bad move, yet the money is good and probably will allow me to explore setting another business for the 2 or 3 days left of the week. Should I look for a job or risk this. Seems like a good opportunity but only 3 days?

    Take the Risk

Risk it.....you will do fine, if you work hard.

Good luck, whichever way you go.

I think the "unknown" is always something we have a tendancy to fear.

From what you've described, I'd say that you are up for a change of some kind.

I kind of wish I had that opportunity to have my own practice (especially one that is established).

I worked for too many years in an environment that sucked the energy right out of me. I left almost 4 years ago when I found a wonderful position that suits me perfectly and I love the environment of the company. I'm so glad this opportunity came along and wish you the best no matter which road you take.

I agree with Warren and Coupe......except I might try to develop a low vision sub specialty. Let's face it the CL business is fraught with potholes and basically belongs to the OD's. Why complete when, with just a little effort, you can get their referral business. The same with the ophthalmologists in your area. Certainly the ones in your current practice will give you a hand, as well as the vision rehabilitation aspect being able to open doors in all the ophthalmology practices. If you are interested, PM me and I'll tell you how I did it and show you how you can too!
    Whatever you decide, good luck.

PS Working in a one man shop can be a lot of fun if you like the guy you work with!

Sounds like this might be a good time to move on....I'm not sure how you feel, but if you think for one minute, you might regret not stepping out on your own, then run, don't walk..go for it..no regrets!

    Go for it . . . . !!

Your skill set will allow you to make it. You're in God's waiting room! Low vision might not be a bad idea. I worked a practice where they were only going to do it one day a week and they actually ended up with two. It was very rewarding work and gave me a fresh perspective.

    Good luck to you!!

    Are you a sales person?

COT, ABOC and NCLEC are added bonuses, sales is a pre-requisite.
