    Shamir Office Vs. Essilor Computer

Has anyone tried the new Essilor computer lens? (which from what I can tell has been so aptly named the "Essilor Computer Lens")

We have been using the Shamir Office lens for years for all our computer user/desk job patients and its always worked well.

Anyone find that the Essilor lens is any better? Any reason to switch?

    Thanks for any input!!

I haven't used one yet myself - but the skinny during development was that it was going to be the next generation of Prio lens - or at least was developed with the Prio folks adding a fair amount of input. Although the Prio company was dissolved back about 9 or 10 years back from what I've heard. The office lens works very well for most patients needing that intermediate/near correction and a wider-than-typical-progressive field of view. The Essilor Computer lens is fit more or less the same as the office if I recall...so time will tell perhaps if it's really much if any better.

    sigh

I guess no one has really taken the bait yet for this lens...

I looked up one lab's prices and it appears to cost more than the Office lens for some reason.

It appears we cant get it without AR, which isnt necessarily a bad thing.

Does anyone know if we use it, if VSP has it under the same category as the Office lens??

(I doubt anyone knows since no one seems to use it, LOL) :hammer:

I may not have used this lens yet, but I have read Pete Hanlin's excellent CE in the latest 20/20 on this lens and the Essilor Anti-Fatigue.

If nothing else, Pete gives us some truly excellent vocabularly and phrases to use when presenting this class of lens.

For example: "Anyone use a computer extensively on a weekly basis?"

Good enough for me. I'm looking forward to giving it a go.

I recently wanted to order the Shamir Office through VSP . It was no longer listed as an option. The only one listed was the Essilor Computer lens. It took an extremely long period of time to get. (Longer than normal like 3-4 weeks even from the regular Essilor lab we use.) The charge was the same.

The Office is no longer listed as a progressive lens, it like most of the computer lenses js now listed under bifocals (why the Sola Access, Shamir Office, and Hoya Tact are bifocals while the Essilor Computer is a progressive is a mystery that I'd love to hear the psudo-logic behind that decision)

Is the Essilor computer an F category progressive lens? I read somewhere that it was a L category, does anyone know?

The Essilor computer is a category L from the VSP's product index (under the VSP manual on Eyefinity):

    Essilor Computer Lens (Essilor)
    Airwear:
    Progressive L—Plastic LA
    Polycarbonate LD

I've fit about three of them. Refit one of them into an Office lens. The "distance" portion, which for one pt was around 6 feet in an Office lens, is only about 3 feet in the Essilor computer. The rx on that one was -.75 sph +150 add OU. That pt sits at our front desk, and couldn't really see far enough to greet patients coming in. So, not impressed.

The only one I tried was for a patient who previously purchased a European version that we can't get in the US. The European version has the choice of 3 feet range or a longer one.

I've fit a handful of different manufacturers task progressive lenses and the Office is hard to beat for both performance and value. With more Dynamic Power ranges, the Office seems to be a good fit for the emerging presbyopes who have been surviving on drugstore readers. On a side note...... Our town also hosts "The Office" TV program which often provokes many unusual statements about the product.
