I understand your meaning but I have never thought of Veterans Day as a happy day.
As a military kid I spent those days in cemeteries commemorating those who had fallen in battle. I spent many hours, standing in the cold, listening to taps, and prayers for the dead. For many years, I spent this day walking in Arlington Cemetery with my father, looking at the graves of those who fought and died for our country.
For the living it is a day of reflection and memories of those who are no longer with us.
I can say thanks, but I can't say happy on this day.
My husband is a Vietnam Vet. Applebees is giving free meals to vets today and we ate dinner there. Several people thanked my husband for his service. What a difference from when he came back from Vietnam and people spit at him.

Any day you can wake up, get out of bed under your own power, and know who you are is a happy day. It's even happier when you're a Vet, as many of them have been through so much, and lived to tell about it.
I had breakfast with a bunch of Vets this morning, and they ranged in age from 34 to 83 years of age. (It's a bunch of us that get together after church) There were 12 of us, 8 were vets, 3 had been in a war, and the rest of us served during peacetime. The 3 that had been in wars all are small businessmen, and they all have positive attitudes, and seem to have used their experiences to their advantage. They truly were a happy bunch today.
I realize that war causes many scars, and many folks don't have the opportunity to pick up where they left off. Those are the people that made some of the greatest sacrifices, and I am forever indebted to them.
A happy day? Yeah, it is for me, but it's also a day of reflection and appreciation.

Thank you to all Veterans on this, your day. We are thankful for your service on our behalf and proud of you for answering the call. We are a stronger country and a safer country because of your service. Most of us sleep soundly tonight because of what you have done and what you have sacrificed. You have our gratitude.
Sincerely,
Harry Jilson

Don't just thank a veteran on Veterans' Day
From hereALBANY-- Citing a report that nearly 131,000 veterans across the nation are living on the streets, Sen. Charles Schumer (D) reiterated on Wednesday the need to pass federal legislation that would provide additional funding to programs that aim to curb veterans' homelessness.
Hopefully you won't object to a tax increase to fund help for our veterans.
...Just ask me...
A big thank you for your service and many sacrifices you have made for our country!
:)
