Anyone try the new Physio Short?

I've never been that crazy about the Ellipse, I use more Definity Short. Now they have come out with the Physio Short. Has anyone tried it yet? Does anyone know how it differs from the Ellipse? I think that the Ellipse might be discontinued, just a feeling I have.

I had one person tell me it's to the Ellipse what the Comfort is to the Physio.

I won a free pair at an Essilor bash last night (with a free Avance AR) so I'm going to make myself a pair, too.

I'd talk to your Varilux rep if you can, but it's a good sight better than the Definity short (which is a pretty bad design according to three labs we work with). It has a wider distance field, and the Physio design that works to improve contrast sensitivity as well. So it's supposed to be better than both the Def short AND the Ellipse. I haven't heard a breath about the Ellipse going the way of the Dodo, and wouldn't expect it to. The Physio short is also available as 360 digital surfaced as well as I recall.

Thanks for your input. Why do the labs say it's a bad design?

I know one optical that uses almost nothing but Definity and Definity Short because they have such good success with it. We use it a lot with good results, too. I have a pair and I love wearing them because I hardly notice that I am wearing a progressive, it's very eary to wear.

In my opinion, there are more lenses that need to be discontinued. How come in the contact lens industry, new lenses are constantly being introduced, and the "old" models go away? No more old technology still out there, when there are new, more comfortable, better acuities-giving lenses.

When Cadillac makes a new model for the new year, they stop making the old one, right? (This is not a GM/foreign/domestic/whatever your choice of luxury car argument. Something great is "the Cadillac of" whatever.) Why do we still have the option of giving a patient what they've been wearing for 15 years?

Sorry for the rant. I'm going to go start a new thread about why I'm so crabby today.

    Which ones do you think?

I was talking to an Essilor rep and she said they were discontinuing some progressives next year but wouldn't say which ones. I don't think they would discontinue the Comfort, Natural, or Ovation. Someone asked if it was the Panamic but she said something to indicate it wasn't (but maybe she was trying to throw us off). I thought maybe the Super No Line, that's an old one.

I have been wearing the Physio Short for several months. I like it. I have the same RX done in Precise Short, Perfas Premier Short as well. My next pair I am going to try is the Autograph II.

Let us know what you think of yours when you wear it.

I actually tried to order a lens a couple weeks ago that resulted in a call from my lab that it had been discontinued: the Sola Percepta. I had a patient that had been in it for so long, and had no desire to change, but lo and behold, we had no choice. He has no idea he's wearing the Comfort now (which I thought was a close enough lens in comparison), and he's perfectly happy.

Now that Essilor has the Comfort 360, Panamic 360 and Ellipse 360, I wonder if they will keep the originals around much longer? If the new designs are just a little better, I don't see why they'd want to keep producing the old ones. Are VIP and XL still available? It just seems weird to me that manufacturers are going to produce old designs if they've come out with something better (after the new one has been proven actually to be better!). If they are better, I wouldn't miss the old ones. Ellipse especially. When I wore that, reading was okay, but the intermediate was worthless!

Actually, the 360 versions start out as the same exact lenses as the non-360 versions, just have digital backside surfacing. So if they disco'd the Comfort 360, they'd have to disco the Comfort also.
I still use the XL only for adds above 3.00.

Very interesting. The Definity short has been my only choice for short corridor, and not one failure. I got a voucher for physio short yesterday, and will make up a pair for the bride to try, (high cyls), to compare for me.

    Hi Peter

Definity is a double side progressive from J&J. Essilor are selling this in Europe now. The lens has been developed by Shamir 6 years ago (I guess many of your guys did´t knew that? )

Apparently the original definity was a mono design the newer 2.0 is a multidesign. The phsio short finally fixed rhe issue between the markings being the same for the traditional and 360 versions. I have. Heard that they will do this for their other designs as well. My guess and it's purely that is the panamic will be gone although it was more advanced then the comfort it never took off. Shame since it made a great sun lens.

Personally, I prefer the regular non-360 Physio to the Definity short, both of which are at 17. Even better are my GT2's (17) and wait for it...........
Sola Compact Ultras (15). Okay, my Physio's are better than the compacts at the computer (surprise). Can't stand the Ellipse, which is too bad, as i like the frame I have it in. Current fave is the GT2... Waiting to get my Individuals for true optic bliss...

    Hey Kitt,

Where did you happen to come by this info? The Comfort has been upgraded here in the states with Essilor's 360 digital processing...but haven't heard anything about a "new" Comfort design. Perhaps this is just being done in the EU for now?

Just put our doctor into a physio short... so far she likes it, she said it is better then what she has previously worn (hoya short varieties).

i would have liked to get her into a freeform lens, but i think we will save that for the next pair (probably in a month or 2)

im torn between this and the definity short... i would like to see a well done direct comparison of the two.

Awaiting my voucher now. I am currently wearing the Physio and before that the Ellipse. I will compare and let you all know as soon as I get them made.

I got my new Physio Short progressives today

I got them today and have worn them since this morning. My rx is a -1.50 -75 on the right and a -2.00 -.25 on the left with a +2.50 add. My seg height is 15.5 high.

I like this lens. The distance is very good, it's clear almost to the sides of the lenses. The intermediate is very useable. I had no problems with the computer at work or the one I am working at now. Of course, I have the computers set correctly so they aren't too high.

The near is high and also good. I have always taken my glasses off when I did any extensive reading but today I made a point to leave these on. Of course, without my glasses my reading area is bigger but I can comfortably read with these lenses. That's pretty good with a +2.50 add.

I can easily forget I am wearing a progressive with these lenses.

Comparing them to my Definity Shorts and Ellipses- The Definitys are the least swimmy and have a slightly larger intermediate area. But the reading area in the Definity lenses are not nearly as good. The add is +.25 weaker and that could be making some of the difference.

I like these more then the Ellipses. I think the areas are better and I feel the progressive less.

I dispensed my first Physio Short yesterday, to a patient which I was a little apprehensive about her reaction. She loved it! Reading was comfortable, and peripheral wasn't blurry at all, except in the extreme outsides of the lens. She kept going back and forth between those and her old lenses, and was just loving them. If anyone's interested, her Rx was
    -3.25 -0.25 x060 +1.25
    -3.50 -1.25 x140 +1.25

So, not a super-strong Rx, but enough that she'd know if something was off.

So far, it's one for one. I'm hoping this will take the place of using Ellipse now. Time will tell.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

I'v had some trouble with the Definity short. It costs more for the patient, and I'v had a handful that are not impressed. I'm looking forward to trying this physio short. Should I charge about the same price as the Definity short?

I tried holding a pair of +.25 trial lenses over the reading area of my Definity lenses to see if that would help. It did make it a little clearer but not as good as my new Physio lenses.

I have the Physio Short 360 and like them. I don't think I clarified which one in my previous posts. Getting ready to compare them to Autograph 2.
