    Arrow Long forms

We simply call a Right Eye a Right Eye and a Left a left.
We respect the Right of others and their freedom to call what ever to that is left with them..
America calls something like OD and OS. Can some body Translet it in to English and Explain the short form for me?;)

    Oculus Dexter=Right
    Oculus Sinister= Left

This being in Latin which has been used in medicine for (almost) ever as an international dead language. In theory any doctor and most scientists have been taught Latin and can understand it.

    Thanks Chip,
It occured to me many a times that OD is also used to describe some sub professional of our cult. What's it ? Optician-Doctor? Optician Dispenser ? Optician Disappered? Optican Dexter !!(What a sinister scheme!!)
I would be glad to know more of such alphabetic permutations widely used there.

O.U. also latin, Oculus Uterque meaning both eyes.

example- +2.50 sphere o.u., meaning +2.50 sphere for each eye.

The latin always reminds me of something that was written on my desk, in one of my classes in high school (almost 30 yrs. ago). It said "Latin is a dead language and now its killing me".

    "Oculus" is Latin for "eye".
Dexter means Right (side). If someone is good at working with their hands, we call them dexterous.
Sinister means Left (side). Left handed people were once considered to be evil, thus the word sinister is used in the English language to refer to an evil person.
Not sure why the doctors even bother writing in Latin - most of their writing is impossible to read anyway!

We also use /c and /s a lot (meaning "with" and "without," respectively)...

However, perhaps the most important abbreviation to recognize when it appears on a patient record is: P.I.T.A. (which, of course, means "Pain in the ****").
