For some reason, I am just now hearing about SolFX lenses from Transitions. What is the lowdown on these lenses? Break it down for me...tell me about them someone.....
Thanks!

I thought they were Essilor's version of Younger's drivewear???
I might very well be wrong, but hopefully someone will come along and clear it up!

I am now seeing the SOLFX name on two products... Drivewear and Polarized Transition from iRX. The difference is that the iRX lens goes to a Gray or Brown 3 in darkness when exposed to UV light.
I am guessing that SOLFX is a new Transitions name for their Polarized Transitions products of any manufacturer, as Younger is behind Drivewear and Specialty Lens Co. (now an Essilor co.) is behind the iRX lens.
this is an annoying problem with products. They release them and are so unclear with what the product is that no one knows what is going on.
Just tell us what the product does and why it is better!!!

The skinny...
SOLFX is Transition's brand name for a photochromic product designed to replace a sun lens, instead of a clear lens.
It may or may not have polarization, but will probably have some tint to start out with (ie, it won't be clear).

I had a patient that came in with a photocopied page on SolFx and after researching it it sounds like there really are two separate products that are marketed under the same name but it sounds like the Solfx that everyone is asking for is actually Essilors/transitions version that is very similar to drivewear.
Lots and Lots of different products under this "umbrella", some polarized, some not. Very confusing, but not hard to figure our what you want to use and not use, Younger yes, Esillor no.

Yeah, the more I research them I realize your right. I spent a bit of time this morning looking into these things and it sounds like there isn't a lot of difference between solfx and the Drivewear that we already work with. I did see that they are possibly available in grey which is kinda cool compared to the amber/brown of the drivewear. But now your suggesting that some of the Solfx products are not polarized? Is this correct? I was under the impression that the allure of these things revolves around the notion that they combine the technologies of polarized and transitions. Is this not always the case and if so what is the difference between Solfx and your basic Transitions? Would it just be in the extra coatings?
The following SOLFx are available:
Grey Polarized (SLC, CR-39 only)
Brown Polarized (SLC, CR-39 only)
Drivewear Polarized (Younger, CR-39 and Poly)
Autumn Gold NOT polarized (X-Cel, Trivex only)
Green SOLFx are also available, though I'm not sure if they are polarized or not (I think they are, here's the article on them www.transitionssolfx.com/pdf/nr_NEOX%20Transitions%20SOLFX.pdf)
The Drivewear lenses (and they are EXCELLENT lenses) are the exact same as the SOLFx lenses from SLC, with the only difference being the color. The Drivewear lenses actually are SOLFx lenses, just branded under the Drivewear name by Younger.
The Autumn Gold lenses start out yellow and transition to a Brown/Amber tint. They'd make excellent shooter's glasses, though I do wish they were polarized as well.
The biggest difference, polarized or not, between the SOLFx and Transitions, is that they will darken behind a car windshield.

What this brings very useful is that can be used in many situations: when you're driving a car or a motocycle, on the waters, in the outdoors, when you trail, when you just walk, when you're running and also is a stylish accesory.
Just came across this post, did not realize it was recently resurrected .
Transitions SOLFX is the brand name for Transitions Optical's line of sunwear products. There are actually 7 different products offered under this brand name, all optimized for specific outdoor activities. Because the products are designed specifically for various activities, the features can differ. Some are polarized, one activates behind the windshield of a car and the various color options can differ and are specific to activity. Details are included in the product listing below:
