On- Line Ordering- PD or No

    Hello,

I am looking at our stance on providing PD and other services to customers that choose to purchase their eyeglasses on-line. Currently we do not provide the PD to these customers because we do not trust the quailty of the product or the standards to which these companies hold themselves too.

We have always offered the best availiable lens options and the top quaility in frames, because we believe the customer deserves nothing less.

I have started to hear of some places offering services for on-line glasses with a dispense fee?

So, waht are your feeling or ideas, as this seems to be a growing concern in our market place?

Are there any legal issues with withholding a pt's PD? Currently I will give a patient their PD if they ask. I guess I never thought to refuse the pt that measurment. However, if it is not part of the prescription do we have the right to refuse to give it to them?

Check your state laws, as some the PD is part of the prescription, if not, do as you please.

Our "fee" gives you your properly measured PD, monocular or binocular, an adjustment after you recieve your glasses and any troubleshooting that may be required. I have had two takers. I haven't seen the glasses come back yet.

In our office, a PD isn't taken by anyone until glasses are being ordered by an optician. So unless I'm fitting someone, there's no PD to release or withhold. I have had plenty of other opticals (mall shops mainly) call to ask for a PD. That just makes me crazy. Just yesterday one of the gals in my office had some other office calling and asking for one, and I just said, "the opticians fitting those glasses needs to take their own measurement. I don't have one." :hammer:
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

    My PD position

    I was asked recently.

"Pupillary measurements and eye position/alignment is often subject to change over time. To ensure the greatest accuracy, we re-measure your pupillary distance *each* time we begin a new order for eyewear. "

(And, if pursued by a "rightgeous" individual)...

"It's really no different than a kitchen cabinet maker. They'll take their own measurements, which they alone are responsible for. Even with an estimate, a craftsman will not "give" his carefully taken measurements away so that another contractor may benefit from the same."

    Simple as that.

In NY, PDs are not manadatory on the RX. If they were, then HIPPA law would apply, and an *entity* would not be able to obtain the same without a written consent from the "patient".

So...no phone call, email or fax request would do for the "PD", yes?

    Correct me if you disagree.

Can anyone tell me where I might search to find out if the PD is part of the RX or not?

Start by digging through the state Dept. of Health website. Look under Optometry or Opticianry.

FYI- In Wisconsin the PD is not required as part of the exam or prescription. So you do not need to provide it as part of their records. If the Doctors comes out and takes it and puts it in the patients medical file it is. We do not have the Doctors do that.

There are only two states that require the PD be taken as part of the exam. In those cases the RX would have the PD and the patient would be in his/her legal right to request it.

Does anyone know if the AOA, Para, ABO has made any stances on this. Can't we get someone to be the leader on this.

Can't we be Dentist- United we win- divided we fail.
