    Mission to 3rd world countries

Does anyone know of any organizations that do mission work in 3rd world countries to dispense glasses? I know Georgian College has one (Barrie, ON) I was just wondering if there's any other ones out there that I can volunteer to as well?

    Thanks

Contact either Snitgirl or MLM (search the members list) both have worked on this, although they are in Vancouver.

Medical Ministries International. Christian based, but you don't have to be a Christian to apply. Excellent organization.

Just wait til the end of the present administration, then all you will have to do is travel South for a short drive.

Rule # 1 for mission trips to third world countries! "Don't bring any of 'em back with you!"

It seems funny to me that people want to go to the Third World to do eye mission work. If you look around your area you will find many people that are just as needy. We have the poor and needy in the US and Canada, just look for them.

There is access to quality vision care in North America already, through government subsidies, welfare, first nations, veterans, ect.
There is often no access to such services in many countries, and no subsidies in areas where poverty is much more widespread.
Chip, by not bringing any back with you, I'm not sure if you include the geckos that must have been living in conch shells I purchased in a hotel while on a medical mission to Fiji.
The shells looked nice in our bathroom, the geckos...well, not so much. (just ask my wife.)

I believe in helping all we can.. both in and out of our communities.

But please.. don't forget about supporting your local organizations. In this area, we have had a few organizations that have supported the vision care needs of Indiana residents close due to lack of funding and support.

There have also been a few close calls in regards to some public service events due to lack of volunteers for screenings or education events.

So I encourage a two prong approach if you will.

Actually Dave, there are many in North America that need our help. There are those that fall through the cracks in the system that are homeless and/or low income (no income) that can't get help anyhere else. I've seen this problem throughout the US and in Canada, at least in Ontario, Manitoba and Sask (won't even try to spell it). We need to start at home first before we can justify going to the Third World.

I know it's a dirty wrotten attitude and perhaps it's a result of where I live and the type of work I do. But I do enough work that I don't get paid for to more than double a 10% or 20% contribution in time and money.
