    Suggestions to replace Nike suns

Okay, i'm fed up with crappy reps and want to get rid of Nike. I'm looking for a line of suns that are similar. Any suggestions??

    Nothing Luxottica, FWIW.

    My optometric brother...

Here's the list, and my take, on "sports" sunwear.

    • Oakley: The industry leader. Not a solution for you.
    • Rayban: The up and come-er. Not a solution for you.
    • Maui Jim: Expensive, but very nice. Broad appeal, but not hip.
    • Adidas: Very good quality, but limited range and appeal.
    • Rudy Project: Oakley clone, unknown. See adidas.
    • Wiley X: Another unknown clone.
    • Kaenon: Perhaps the best quality around, and the pricetag to match.
    • Serengetti: Cheap subsitute. May be a good thing! Not cool, but recognizable.
    • Bolle: Poor man's Oakley. May be a good thing.
    • Nike
Consider Nautica. It's pretty cool. It's way off the map, but maybe you'd like it.

We use a lot of Costa Del Mar suns. They have excellent performance and come in a variety of styles.
Rayban is up and coming huh? They've been making sunglasses since 1937. Maybe one day they will figure it out. Serengetti still makes an excellent pair of sunglasses. I wonder if they still have the Strata lens? Rudy Project makes a grear pair of sporty shades that are mostly designed for bike riders.

I have no idea of how "friendly" they are to OD's...but a sport line of sunglasses/goggles would be SPY optics.

If anyone has any experience with them, please let me know...

I carry the Wiley X line in my office. The line looks sharp. They have many styles available for men and women. They also hold up well in the heat. They also have a line for motorcycle riders. The Dr and I both ride and wear the Wiley X frames.

Rudy Project is definitely NOT an Oakley clone (if anything, the opposite could be argued), but it IS an extremely good alternative to Nike. Rudy Project probably has more European market share than Oakley or Nike combined as their products have been largely built for and marketed to the "extreme athlete". Far from extreme, I do put a few miles in on my Cinelli and have worn Rudy for years and years. I love the product.

We've had excellent results from Costa del Mar, but their styles are limited and the "edgier" models tend to be on the large side. What's wonderful about them is the fact of being able to order an Rx-specific frame.

On the less expensive end, consider Tifosi. They're not as prolific and definitely are not what I would consider "high end", but since the owner and I first sat down several years ago to discuss product trends I have realized them as a company who attentively listens to their audience. They've made more changes in their product line than I can count and all for the better. Tifosi 5 years ago is far beneath what you'd get today. Ask for Joe.

These frames are not copies of Nike's suns, but they may be of interest for something different to offer.

Sutrovision sent me some samples to review at the 1st annual *Un-Expo*. I believe that all of the attendees liked the product and thought it to be sellable.

Adidas have a limited appeal as someone mentioned. What are the odds that someone in that group walks through my door? Not too good. On the other hand I keep a few styles on the board for quality and structure demonstration (the rep rotates them) and sell out of the catalog. We are on the Adidas website apparently and every once in a while will get a call from someone who knows exactly what they want or needs parts or extra lenses. They pay up front and we deliver the goods. Same with Liberty Sport suns.

Columbia Sports Wear has a few good suns.

    So does Carrera...

Unfortunately suns has been the weak spot in the industry for a few years now. There are very few affordable wrap metals, and the plastics begin to all look alike.

Thanks for that. I don't carry them, but I previewed them on-line.

Warning against on-line previewing, I guess!
