Night Vision, driving, tints, A/R/ lenses, "clear polarized" lenses & tin foil hats!

We had another one yesterday - a patient who's ophthalmologist told her to go find someone to make her a "clear polarized" lens for night driving.

I thought back to a previous recent discussion on night driving lenses, A/R, tints and the need for increased clarity and comfort in low light / night conditions. There still seem to be a huge number of websites and companies that are trying to promote a "night driving" lens in a variety of tints and densities - ironically, almost none include an A/R lens.

As the world wide web is sometimes likely to do, I found some good and some rather wild and obscure information pertaining to the ways we humans have tried to combat the issue of glare from oncoming headlights in the past. This one from late 1940 was a favorite of mine:

I instantly thought of the Art Bell show! :bbg: I'm sure they protect against alien mind control rays, and the horrible chromatic aberration of poly lenses everywhere! LOL

While the concept is strange at best...at least people were still thinking and working to find a solution to a problem!

I want a tin foil hat, if someone makes one in the shape of a wizards cap, I'd wear it to work - but only if you put the words "Opikal Wizzard" on it

they apparently have broken all the laws of physics and ophthalmic optics that I know about...and for only 59.99!

I feel like e-mailing them and asking if they know what the word "polarized" means.

    Order 'Em....

And then send them to the Dr. so he can see how "well" they work.

Maybe if headlights were in any real way polarized - maybe we can all start using some crazy copper vapor laser headlights and can then just vaporize any oncoming traffic before they have a chance to blind us with their glare! :D:D:D

    night driving

When assessing optimum night driving performance there are many factors to take into account.

These include cone cell performance and how it imapcts Rx and VA
(yes the Rx does change - the instrument we use shows significant Rx changes depending on both ambient lighting type and intensity - as well as the columnated headlight beams)
The ganglion cell responses - a magnocellullar response changinging filter often is much more effctive than an AR coating - sometimes a combination is even better!
Effective visual fields often change (standard field testers are inadequate), movement detection and visio spatial awareness

But you do need specialist instrumentation to be able to assess - and significant training.

I agree Ian - that to do anything even close to right that highly specialized testing does need to be completed. That's something that, sadly, I believe the overwhelming of MD's and OD's fail to realize in much of their "recommendations" to their American patients.

Till that blesses day arrives, we'll all just have to settle with Fezz's beer goggles!
