How do you get progressive marks off ?

Our lab sends us progressives with manufacturer's markings removed, but with a quite permanent marker on the reference points.

What's the safest thing to use, especially on coated lenses?
    1. Alcohol and elbow grease?
    2. Non-acetone nail polish remover?
    3. Saliva?
    4. Coffee?
    5. Something else?

If that doesn't work, I use a product called "All-Off".

    I get it here:

GENTLY heat the lenses in the frame warmer and the marks come right off with an alcohol pad.
A lack of planning on your part DOES NOT constitute an emergency on mine!

    Fezz is wrong....................

Fezz is promoting Essilor on one post and condems them on another.
The largest corporation has now a majority in above mentioned company.

There are also other products on the market that are equivalent or better and cost half as much.

Our lab uses the Lumocolor permanent markers which can easily be removed with alcohol. With so many different coatings on the market these days, we found it to work the best. If they don’t come off with alcohol, I would ask your lab to change markers. It is the easiest solution.

We use Marks Away. I think we order it from Stormin Norman's. May have to use a bit of elbow grease, but works well! ... and Happy Friday to all :bbg:

    Essilor and VSP!
<DIV id=post_message_302118>PARIS (Dow Jones)--French opthalmic lens maker Essilor International SA (EI.FR) announced Tuesday the acquisition of Belgium's De Ceunynck as well as assets in North America and the Middle East, as part of its external growth strategy.
    MAIN FACTS:
    - No financial details were provided.
    - Essilor has acquired all outstanding shares in De Ceunynck, which has a prescription laboratory near Antwerp and 92 employees, and generated EUR17 million in 2008 revenue. The current management team will remain in place.
    - In the United States, Essilor is continuing to expand its network with the acquisition of Barnet & Ramel Optical ($10.8 million in revenue), Apex Optical ($2.7 million), ABBA Optical ($2.2 million) and Vision Pointe Optical ($1.1 million). The four prescription laboratories are located respectively in Nebraska, Florida, Georgia and Idaho.
    - Essilor has also acquired a majority stake in OptiSource International ($5.3 million in revenue), a manufacturer and distributor of optical supplies and consumables for opticians and laboratories.
    - Essilor has joined with Vision Service Plan to acquire McLeod Optical, a prescription laboratory based in Rhode Island with 2008 revenue of $10 million. Essilor will have a majority interest and VSP and the principals of McLeod will each own a minority interest in the company.
    - In the Middle East, Essilor and its partner Amico, the local market-leading distributor of ophthalmic optics products, have signed a contract to set up a 50/50 joint venture that would operate Amico's prescription laboratory in Dubai.
    - Nikon Optical Canada, a subsidiary of Nikon-Essilor, has signed an agreement to increase from 50% to 100% its stake in TechCite, a prescription laboratory located in Calgary, Alberta. TechCite generated 2008 revenue of approximately C$6.8 million.

I use All-Off, if that doesn't work then I use steel wool. When I'm done I use one of those scratch filler pencils you see on TV. Works all the time!

Why not use an airbrush and sand blast it off, and the resurface the lens

Great idea, Drink the alcohol and sandblast the markings off. After a few Captain and Cokes, you wont even notice (or care about) the markings.

How do you gently heat lenses in a frame warmer? Won't that craze the lenses? Mine is pretty hot even on a low setting.

    I use All-Off.

    All-Off or similar.

I tried another brand (sorry - can't remember) and I may as well have waited for the wind to erode the marks away.

Heating a lens is perhaps the worst thing you could possibly do. I actually DID have a patient try to remove some superglue they'd applied after their 15 year old frame broke...WITH 320 GRIT SANDPAPER!!!

I had the same experience with BPI's Mark Off, but if you havea few jobs rub the pen on them and let them sit for a few minutes then come back to them and whalla they come off easier.

All-Off and patience has also worked for me to remove superglue-gone-wrong and that stupid liquid scratch filler sold on TV, always for a VERY appreciative patient.

Chris has decided to blast Essilor than promote his own product. He has an ink remover that seems to work better than anything else I have tried. PM him and I am sure he will provide you the information. He may also provide a rant on Essilor.
