FDA Warning on Zicam Cold Remedy products

Consumers should stop using Zicam Cold Remedy nasal gel and related products because they can permanently damage the sense of smell, federal health regulators said Tuesday.

The over-the-counter products contain zinc, an ingredient scientists say may damage nerves in the nose needed for smell. The other products affected by the Food and Drug Administration's announcement are adult and kid-size Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs . . .

I haven't been using these products myself, but I thought it would be well to post this.

I tried the Zicam nose gel things ONCE and immediately blew it back out into a tissue. It just made me feel like my nasal passages were full of this medicinal-smelling snot. For allergy meds I prefer the old-fashioned pill, like Claritin or Zyrtec.

    Zinc can also poison birds.

    I have used it...

I read the report yesterday, and thought oh well, just another thing that can cause major side effects. That's a big one. I DID feel that it lessened my cold. So, we'll just go back to 2 weeks or 14 days of having a cold.:hammer:
