Granger eye doctor charged with fraud

I was in South Bend last weekend. This was the front-page headline in Saturday's paper.

    http://www.southbendtribune.com/apps...WS01/906129953

Gabriele fraudulently removed healthy eye lenses and inserted artificial lenses into patients, the indictment alleges. Some of these surgeries were poorly performed and resulted in the patient suffering worse eyesight. These patients then underwent further surgeries and procedures in an effort to improve their sight, including further refractive and laser procedures, prosecutors said.

    And

Some of these surgeries were performed on children, and some resulted in “injuries and harm” to patients, the indictment alleges.

I am glad he's the exception and not the rule, good riddance.

Exceedingly rare, to the best of my knowledge. It's certainly a harsh reminder that it's the patient who decides when to have cataract surgery, not the surgeon, notwithstanding contrast, glare, and snellen test results.

For those that don't know...he and his wife were found dead today at one of his clinics. An apparent murder/suicide or dual suicide.

    wow...

That truly is tragic. I can't fathom being that despondent.

I drove by the office today. The office door has flowers all over from patients of this doctor. Truly this has rocked the South Bend Eye Care field. I feel bad for the staff and family. The doors are locked. Crazy events. Its the lead story all over the news around here.
