    Gross...

About a week ago, a pt called and said she had lost her glasses so she wanted to reorder the same pair. I took a CC# over the phone and placed the order.
Then she called me (4 business days after placing the order, they're in final inspection) and says she doesn't want this order any more. She says, "You see, our toilet backed up and so we had to call the plumber. As it turns out, my glasses were clogging everything up. So, I found my glasses and I won't need the new pair after all." :drop: At first I was just worried about the fact that she wanted to cancel the order and the new glasses were already done. I told her I'd have to call her back. It hit me after I got off the phone...she's intending to wear her glasses which have been sitting in poo stew for over a week...

To make matters more interesting, our insurance specialist came in the next day and told me a story that started with, "So, my husband's a plumber...."

    Can you BELIEVE that???
I thought I'd seen it all...

Invite her in for a complimentary adjustment, since they obviously will need it.

When she shows up, pull out the double latex gloves, face shield and dust mask.

    Gotta love theatrics in optical!!

Look why make a big deal about this, plumbers probably have thier glasses drop in bad things all the time. Farmers and other occupations also, haven't you ever watched "Dirty Jobs?"
If cleaned and especially if cleaned with Clorox they would be clean and germ free as anything you have on the shelf.
Not everyone has the wonderfull opportunity work in a surgically clean environment.

What's the big deal. Any of you ever changed a particularly dirty diaper?

You make a good point, Chip...I've heard that a toilet bowl is less germy than a kitchen sink!

When I was a kid the thought of sitting on a public toilet filled me with dreaded images of some old fat hairy a** sitting where I was about to.

Funny- It doesn't bother me that much anymore.:p

The devil greeted his latest arrival and showed the reluctant new resident 2 vast rooms. One was filled with stinging nettles causing all the inhabitants to scream in pain. The other room was filled with poo up to everyone's chest. "Okay" said Satan. "Which room do you choose to spend eternity in?"

"Well the room full of poo sure looks better than the room of stinging nettles." Said the poor slob.

"So be it" exclaimed the devil as he watched the the hapless victim wade in. Immediately after a whistle blew as the loud speakers announced-- "BREAKS OVER-- BACK ON YOUR KNEES!"

According to an OSHA rep at a class on compliance, "any bodily fluid should be considered to potentially carry blood-borne pathogens and should, therefore, be treated as hazardous".

I baited the rep and asked if perspiration qualified. Of course he said, "Yes". I then asked if he'd ever seen a pair of well-worn, "green-cheesy" eyeglasses before. Another affirmitive. Finally, I questioned why there was not more focus on the cleansing of optical tools, given their obvious contact with this nasty stuff. I asked why opticians aren't required to glove when adjusting frames. "[There is no need to take it to the extreme]," was the reply.

Let's face it - we're the red-headed step child (and I am one, literally) of the health care industry and noone really cares about cleanliness, even the very organization who our taxes fund to keep us safe in the workplace.

Chip is right - I'm sure bleach works well on the "poo-stew" glasses. Plumbers have my utmost respect, but I'm not going to wear their glasses after they've dropped in the honeypot. I'm certain that person bleached the heck out of the glasses, but imagine if all they did was rinse them off? Would you want to work on that once the nosepads turned black?

I always told my wife if I ever got some serious disease, it's not from messing around, it's because I stabbed myself with a screwdriver after changing some nosepads. Is that the same as screwing around?

I'm no expert, but I thought it was the toilet SEAT is one of the cleanest places in the house. In fact, this was confirmed on mythbusters as being the cleanist place in their shop even compared to the floor. Human urine is sterile and the only way to pass germs on the seat is if you've got germs making contact with broken skin. But the other deposit in the toilet is filled with bacteria and is definately not something to take lightly. I'm no germaphobe but it surely makes me think about washing my hands more often after adjusting glasses!

Didn't they find that a man's wallet is the most dirty object in an office? I would have thought a woman's purse, but apparently they change often enough to keep the funk from getting to funky.

I guess that means I should clean my hands after handling eyewear but I should REALLY clean them after the patient pays me! I guess that gives new meaning to my usual policy of washing my hands of all things accounting...

    Kyle:
If you could hear the women tellers sound off on the dirtiness of money and the places people pull it out of when making deposits, you might actually want to wash your hands after handleing it. Or if your research makes you skairt of handeling money, just send it to me.

I would say, this person obviously NEEDS a back up pair of glasses and the sale should stand!! Offer her a discount if she balks, rather than loose the sale altogether. BTW...EEEWWWW
