Uncorrected presbyopia while driving makes texting very difficult. The use of a good reading sun lens should reduce the chance of a motor vehicle accident.
Agree. And it's difficult to keep the magazine from sliding off the steering column, RB. I think there should be a "steering wheel clip board".
In the future, I hope we can project a computer screen onto the windshield so we can do our Facebook accounts more easily. It's a real bummer to keep looking down at the phone screen.
How about some kind of alarm when your attention is needed?
What an idea! How about the soothing sounds of squealing brakes, crunching metal and sirens? :shiner:
Don't worry when Obummer gets the Government Motor Corporation building his "safer" rollerskate cars we won't have to worry about such things.

That's what I love about you, Chip. You're always so positive and cheery. Do you make this stuff up yourself, or do you have a ghost writer?
My first car was a 1974 Beetle, and since the floorboards were rusted through, by sliding the floormat (cardboard) over, I could look down and easily view the road.
I don't text, but how about mounting a web cam on the front and the rear of the vehicle, and sending the image to your i-phone? Won't that work? It'll save the hassle of having to look up and refocus, plus, you won't be bothered by the "old" people in the car next to you flipping you off.

Johns - I thought that you may be on to something when I read your post a while ago and I tried it out. It worked great until I entered a hole in T-Mobil's cell coverage.
Please post all future emails to dick@rumplestilskenmemorialhospital.com until further notice. Have to go now - the pain medication is starting to kick in . . . . . Mmmmm
Lexus LS460 for all Twitters I say!
Get you Tweet on!DRIVER MONITORING SYSTEM
The new LS 460 is equipped with the world’s first driver monitoring system, designed to warn of dangers ahead if the driver takes his or her eyes off the road.
A CCD (charge-coupled device) camera is mounted on top of the steering column cover with six built-in near-infrared LEDs, which enable the system to work accurately both day and night.
When the vehicle is started up, the system automatically plots the position of the driver’s facial features – eyes nose and mouth – and measures the width and centre line of the face. This information is used as a reference as it monitors movement of the driver’s head when looking from side to side.
If the driver turns his or her head away from the road ahead while the vehicle is moving and an obstacle is detected in front of the vehicle, the system automatically activates a pre-crash warning light and buzzer. If the situation persists, the brakes are briefly applied to alert the driver. And if this still fails to elicit action from the driver, the PCS engages emergency braking preparation and front seatbelt pre-tensioning.

Shame there isn't some way to test the drivers for having a brain and common sense.

And Judy, you laughed.
There's an Essilor PAL called the "Road Pilot" that is supposed to be optimized for the task of driving a car, but I don't think this lens is available in the U.S., only in Europe.
And sometimes on a snowy road it would switch ends, right? I had a friend that had a bug that would do that occasionally. Pretty unnerving.
But the first vehicle that I drove as "mine" even though it was my Dad's was a converted 1956 WV Kombi van that was made over into a camper.
