    Unbelievable Stupidity #1

It seems that we will all be driving around in little put-puts in a few years. Instead of scooting around like George Jetson we will all be pedaling around like Fred Flintstone.

How are we senior citizens going to take another couple to Foxwoods Casino for the evening in a freaking Prius. How safe will you feel driving on the freeway among the big scary trucks with your grandchildren in the back seat.

    Nice going Barry.

If everyone is driving Prius's, then why are their trucks on the road?

    Unbelievable response.

What planet do you inhabit. Are you here on earth just as an observer?

Don't you want fuel to put in your Prius? Do you want to eat? Do you want the shelves of your local Walmart stocked with Chinese goods?

    Yikes!

i think it's unbelievably selfish and arrogant and short-sighted to drive a vehicle that uses oil at the rate of 15mpg.

We need fossil fuels to feed our people. If it weren't for fossil fuels we would starve.

I think you will be just fine in a Prius

    1 Trillion for war, patriotic!
1 Trillion for our homeland, Socialism!

Some people have no identity without a foe, maybe Barry should call it war on oil cartel for some people to understand the concept. You dont need to waste a Trillion in Iraq if you dont need the oil.

Trillion saved is a Trillion earned, but then again where was the fiscal conservatives when dumb and dumber was getting away with murder?

You made the claim that you should not drive a Prius because it is dangerous, with all of the trucks on the road. Then you followed up by claiming that everyone will be driving a Prius. So if there are no trucks on the road, would the Prius be dangerous anymore.

So grow up and stop trying to make me bash me for things I did not say. You are far better than that to act that way.

Not directed at anyone in particular, just an observation. Why is the whole semi thing always the go to arguement against smaller, more efficient cars? One would think every semi is straight out of "Duel"...hunting small cars like a hungry fox and some field mice.

I think the biggest threat (for anyone) isn't the semis, it's the idiot in the all too big, all too unneeded, "I really can't park this thing" SUV talkin on their damned cell phone. And it's not going to matter if you're on a harley, in a Smartfortwo, or a minivan.

    All Optiboard ladies qualify...

Can we also ban pretty women from the sidewalks?

Dang if they don't distract me!

But then again a Prius will probably leave a smaller bruise than what God left on her when she fell from Heaven!:)

Yeah, this seems like a bigger threat to other people on the road than a semi vs. a prius.

    http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2...ngernails.html

I remember this logic of small cars = unsafe vehicles from when I was a kid in the '70's. God forbid Americans smartened up and learned what the majority of the rest of the car driving world already knew. that's a part of why we're in this mess now in regards to the auto industry. And don't even get me started on our attitude toward diesel.

It seems anything we can do to remain glutonous, all consuming, wasteful sheeple is the American way.

You might want to do a little research on this. Start by reading the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recent report. Then, you might want to dig out that old physics textbook that you never read.

The IIHS report is here for your convenient reference:

So then by using your logic, we should all drive gas powered tanks? Make it a fair playing field?

Then, you might want to dig out that old physics textbook that you never read
Unless you're my father, you have no idea what I have and have not read, sir. So take your condesending tone and...well, you know the drill.

And no one ever said, that I can recall, that all fuel efficient cars need be small, or that they will be. Thanks to forward thinking engineers, we can get more mileage from gas and motors while often preserving horsepower than we ever could. Then there's construction of the cars. Better crash test ratings, materials that can withstand impact better, etc. This will only continue to improve.

Say what you will, I think your thought process, as presented here (obviously we haven't covered the depth and breadth of the topic) is a bit outdated and singular in vision. With this kind of view we will continue to be driving large, oil consuming vehicles and doing little to turn ourselves toward the future. And the future ain't that far away.

BTW, I hate to seem callous but you've got better odds of being killed in an air travel accident than you do in a mini car. (1 in 20,000 die in air travel, 1 in 28,571 in a mini car)

    Oh yeah... and lastly...

In response, the Obama administration announced it is boosting the fuel economy standard for cars, beginning with 2011 models, and instituting a size-based system to set fuel economy targets like the one already in effect for SUVs, pickups, and vans. This system will mandate lower fuel consumption as cars get smaller and lighter, thus removing the incentive for automakers to downsize their lightest vehicles to comply. It also could mean that technology currently used to enhance horsepower would go instead to reduce gas consumption — a direct safety benefit because less powerful cars have lower crash rates.
If that means what I think it means...what's the problem?

Actually, compared to many cars, the Prius has decent leg room in the rear. I don't own one BTW, but I did look at them.

My daughter owns one and my elderly mother has an easier time getting in and out of the Prius than she does my Crown Vic.

Would also make freaking other people out fun. How many people would slow down when they saw you in the rearview mirror? Until you passed them, that was.:bbg: Crown Vics are standard police cars, lol. I always get a laugh out of people that buy those used cop cars, still have the extra mirrors, antennae and front rack mounted.

Like Elwood said to Joliet Jake, "It's got a cop motor, cop tires, cop shocks, and cop suspension".

If you want to see a "small car future," just travel to Europe! There are tiny little Smart cars, Citroens, Peugots and other odd looking motorcraft all over the place!

I don't like the Prius, because- well, they're ugly (and I really like cars- so ugly bothers me). About the only thing on the road less attractive is an Aztek! Add to that the ugly condescending attitude some Prius owners project, and I cringe every time I see one. There's a couple at work that owns one- they are very nice about it and seem to enjoy their car a lot. However, I also have a coworker whose neighbor owns one and gives her a dirty look every time she loads her kids in her Expedition- she actually had the gall to ask her how she could drive a "pollution machine." If my neighbor got on my wife's case about our Navigator, I think I'd leave it idling in the driveway all night just to make a point!

Also, if I'm not mistaken, doesn't Volkswagon have a biodiesel combustion engine that allows some of their vehicles to run almost as effient- if not more so- than a Prius running a "hybrid" engine?

I'm all for saving gas (cause it means saving money as well)- but I prefer technologies that make internal combustion engines more efficient. I get a kick out of celebrities who drive "electric cars" to "reduce their carbon footprint." Newsflash, batteries are NOT "clean energy." Using turbochargers and other nifty electronic and mechanical tricks can make combustion engines quite efficient.

Fossil fuels are ideal for things like automobiles because they pack a lot of energy into a little space. So, I'm all for making cars more efficient- but I'll skip the batteries!

Did you see the South Park "Smug Alert" episode? I'm reminded of it every time I see the new Prius commercial where it looks like it's towing a big smug cloud behind it.
