    Did I get taken?

First of all, I apologize if this is deemed to cross the line for a consumer post. After reading the rules, I feel like this question falls into a grey area. I'm asking here because I'm not sure where else I should go. If anyone can recommend a talented dispensing optician in my area (near downtown Houston, TX) I would love to know, because I'm not very happy with the providers I've dealt with lately.

I recently purchased new glasses at a local shop. I paid for Seiko 1.67 SV lenses with grey transitions, AR, and edge polishing. The RX in my worst eye is -4.5 -1.25 x 125. The frame eye size is 48 and the bridge is 18mm.

My new lenses are a lot thicker than an older pair, same Rx and *larger* eye size, with generic 1.61 lenses. Not just at the edge but in the center too.

If I had to guess, I'd say these new lenses are hard resin with 2.0 CT. The edge thickness is at least 6mm and the CT is definitely not even close to 1mm. According to one of the calculators online, the Seiko 1.67 lens (MR-10) in this frame with my Rx should be closer to 4.5mm. Or does the material come in other thicknesses, and if so, what's the point of such a thing?

Is it possible this was done deliberately by the lab in order to make the lens easier to groove for a semi-rimless frame? Should I have received a refund for the difference in lens cost if the lab indeed did this?

I wanted to ask somewhere else before I potentially insult the optician.

Again, if there is a better place to ask about this (before I go back to the dispensing optician) I'd love to know about it. The glasses are fine but I feel like I paid for a premium product that I did not receive. Thanks in advance for any help.

There is no way for us to answer this. You will have to bring those glasses into a qualified Optician to have them checked out. Good luck.

How would you recommend finding a good, qualified optician?

I do not have any magic solutions to doing that. Sorry.

Contact your legislatures and tell them you'd like them to support Texas Opticians Licensure and have all you friends & associates do the same.

varmint, you make an interesting point. I didn't realize opticians in Texas weren't required to be licensed. I suppose that helps explain why so many of them are turkeys. :bbg:

Surprisingly, I didn't see anything on the ABO website to locate licensed practitioners. Is it exceedingly rare to find one in an unlicensed state?

    Petition signed.

As for finding an independent with a lab, that sounds like the holy grail to me, but calling around I've struck out. I need to check with the local school of optometry.
