Confused Transitions clear around edges, yellow in middle?

I've got an optician friend that was telling me today that she had a pt come in may '08 and purchase CR39 transtions gray FT28 lenses (not sure of exact RX, but I know it is a plus lens)...pt came back in August '08 complaining that they didn't get clear inside like he wanted them to, so after some discussion, she remade the lenses and now he's come back in with the same problem...

She says they are kind of yellow-ish down the middle, and clear at the nasal and temporal edges...lab says that it may have something to do with him putting the glasses in the case before they are completely clear?? (the frame has a magnetic clip-on as well, not sure if that matters or not, but I thought I would throw it out there...)

After talking to her about it, I was really curious, because I can't recall ever seeing anything like that, any of you guys or gals ever had an experience like this?

Thanks in advance for your input! :)

I would start by changing labs. That was a stupid answer. I also read on your other post that it is Trans. I would have a hard time believing that. I have no love for Transitions but in 49 yrs ( God, I've been doing this for that long?) I have never seen them like that. I have seen a lot of Vision Ease Photochroms delam. Also look for stress around the edges from the frame. Just my thoughts.

    Hi Heather

I have never seen anything of what you describe on a Transitions lens.

You did say it was a FT28 in standard index, is your friend positive on the lens material?

I have had ecp's send in lenses that were supposed to be 1.50 segmented and they turned out to be a competitor's poly with delam problems.

If your friend can send in the lenses, we can check them out.

    regards,
    Jim

Like you, the answer she got about putting them in the case too soon, seemed a bit odd to me.

    Hi Jim!

First, a big thanks to taking time to respond!

Second, I have to agree with you on this, I've never seen anything like what she's described to me, so, like you, my first question was '..are you sure it's a "Transitions" brand? And are you sure it's CR39?'...

Thanks for your input! I'll update her on some of the ideas and suggestions I've found here! :)

    Hi Heather,
The lenses arrived today. They are standard index Transitions. The back side of the lenses picked up a stain of some kind. The lenses were not hardcoated on the backside. The pattern is a cleaning type of a swirl, that is why the stain started in the center and graduated out to a lighter pattern.

The CR607 polymer is very absorbant. To avoid stains, the lab needs to hardcoat the backside of the lens.

I left your friend a message to call me when she has a chance.

    best regards,
    Jim
