Angry Another Mom & Pop Bites the Dust...

Here's another mom and pop store that just couldn't compete w/the big guys. I'll be they wish they were one of those that are "too big to fail"...

Hate to see them dropping like flies. It looks like this place was named after the father.

Sam's Club closed its warehouse at 27853 Chardon Road in Willoughby Hills today, citing poor sales and competition.
The store, open since 1991, employed 130 full- and part-time workers who will receive wages and benefits through July 5. Sam's Club will try to find them positions at other Sam's Club or Wal-Mart stores, spokeswoman Kristy Reed said.
Sam's Club referred members to stores in Mentor, Oakwood Village or Brooklyn, but also is offering membership refunds through May 17.
Willoughby Hills Mayor Robert Weger said the store, one of the city's 10 largest employers, faced competition from nearby Costco Wholesale Corp. and BJ's Wholesale Club.

Wow that just goes to show you how really screwed up things have gotten. I wonder if it had an Optical department. Bigger isn't always better. Maybe now there'll be a independent resurgence..... no ... wait a minute..what was i thinking.:hammer:

    Poor Ma and Pa.

I bet they dreamed of their little optical business carrying the family for generations to come.

Sad to see that their hard work, sweat and tears, fail.

Yeah, they had an optical dept. :o

The thing that really stinks is that there was absolutely NO notice or hint of closure to the employees. One lady they interviewed had just bought a house in the area, and now won't be able to make the payments...

Sam's closed it's Plymouth Massachusetts store yesterday after about six years here.

No notice, just locked the doors. All employees got 6 weeks severence plus a week for every year worked. Many have already been hired by the Walmart across the parking lot. There are also three other walmarts within a 15 mile radius

I think the reason was that it was next to a Super Walmart that had most everything, so why pay membership?

The next closest Sam's is doing well, it is next to a regular Walmart.

I've had three patients in two days order contacts from me because the Sam's closed.

As a side note, I know that some of the Opticals inside Sam's Clubs aren't owned and operated by them or Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. They lease out the space. I'm not sure about this one in particular. Goes to show you, nothing is ever certain in today's economy.

I think they already had the 27 planned. These big companies have these plans every year. Open 50 stores here and 100 there. These are already planned. What was not planned was how poorly the Sams Clubs were doing and that they had to be closed.

Redhot Jumper The refund to ....................

Without putting up a fuss, Wal-Mart has quietly written a check to the
taxpayers of Ohio for $1.7 million for a job creation tax credit the
company received eight years ago, but failed to fulfill. The refund to
taxpayers comes roughly one month after it was widely reported that
Wal-Mart was shutting down an optical lab in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio,
    destroying 650 jobs.

The company said the closing would allow it to pand
its optical operations in Indiana and Arkansas and create 100 jobs. But
that was of no consolation to the Ohio workers. Before the Ohio layoffs,
Wal-Mart owned and operate four optical labs in the U.S., employing more
    than 1,900 workers. The optical labs are in Fayetteville, Arkansas;
Dallas, Texas; Columbus, Ohio; and Crawfordsville, Indiana.

On March 29,2009 Sprawl-Busters reported that economic development officials in Ohio
were investigating the sudden closure of Wal-Mart’s optical lab in
Columbus, to see if the retailer violated the terms of a tax agreement
with the state. On March 27th, Wal-Mart shut down its lab and threw
650 ‘associates’ out of work. Eight years ago, this optical lab was created
with a $1.8 million job-creation tax credit-—a form of corporate welfare
that helps Wal-Mart reduce its operating costs vis a vis its competitors
that do not have tax subsidies. The lab, which makes eyewear sold in
Wal-Mart vision centers, was closed by the company as an apparent
cost-cutting move. A state official said at the time that the Department
of Development was reviewing its agreement with Wal-Mart to determine
if the state can recoup some or all of its taxpayer’s money. “We’ve spoken
to the company and expressed our disappointment,” a state official said.
Wal-Mart would not discuss the terms of its agreement with Ohio,
but said it would work with officials to resolve the situation---which means to get
the story out of the headlines. This week, roughly one month after the
lab’s demise, Wal-Mart wrote out a check for $1.7 million as partial
repayment for its $1.8 million subsidy. A spokesman for the Ohio
Department of Development called Wal-Mart’s prompt repayment
‘responsible.’ “We’re very pleased that Wal-Mart responded so quickly to
this,” the spokesman told the Columbus Dispatch newspaper................................

    WM is too modest.

They're actually creating many more jobs than they give themselves credit for. (Unless all the new jobs in Mexico don't count...)
