    Mystery solved!

Three years ago, I opened an office in a free standing building. I love the location because although it is near the city, it has a rural feeling w/all the trees and grass around it. It has a ton of natural light and the frames show really well on the wall. We put hardwood maple floors in, and the whole place has a very open feeling to it.

To add a little bit of class to the place, we added high-backed leather chairs at the dispensing tables.

About two years ago, I noticed that the chair at the dispensing where the customer would sit had two marks on the leather that looked almost like a chemical burn. The marks were about 8 inches long, and .25 inches wide.

I sampled all types of our cleaning agents on the material, but nothing would reproduce the mark. I switched chairs, and 6 months later, a larger, but similar mark showed up on the seat!

Yesterday, I had a meeting at that office w/ the manager and I got there a little early. I looked at the chair, and there was a distinctive burn HOLE, about the size of a quarter, all the way into the foam! I asked the mgr what happened, and he said that it was not like that when he left the evening before. The only thing he did was wipe everything down with furniture polish.

The track lights are about nine feet high, so I know they couldn't have generated that kind of heat.

We sat at the dispensing table and started the meeting, and then it hit me what had happened...

    Anyone want to guess?

(You're all tons smarter than me, so you'll probably guess the answer much sooner than it took me, but I'm sure you'll get it.)

Well I know in our office we have a couple of burn spots on the carpeting do to the reflection of light. Big open windows, shines onto mirror.. hits the floor just right..

In your case, with the trees, rays of light would be scattered. Combination of sunlight and the polish on the chair?

Have any big glass paperweights hanging around?
My mother in law's tv had a semicircle of burned areas on the top of it and it befuddled them until I saw it. There was a large glass paperweight and you could see how the sun moved and burned the wood on the top,it had just the right focal length.

    Jubilee's right!

In the middle of the meeting, the sun hit me right in the eyes. I moved the dispensing mirror a bit and pointed it towards the chair, and nothing.

Then, I flipped the mirror (it's on a stand) over to the concave side. Within 10 SECONDS the chair had a burn hole, smoke, and FLAMES coming out of the hole! 10 freaking seconds! Thank God the foam inside was flame retardant!

I invited the tenants in the other part of the blg to come over, and demonstrated it for them. They all said that if they hadn't seen it w/their own eyes, they wouldn't have believed how fast it went up.

The final demo. I did for my insurance agent, and he too was flabbergasted.

At least now I know what caused it, and you can bet we're going to be much more careful in the future.

I hate it when those magnifying mirrors focus the early morning sun.....

I hate it when those magnifying mirrors focus the early morning sun.....on my furniture! You have to be facing about due east (at least for the AM Sun). That happens more often than you think!

The window does face due east.

It seems that the burns have occurred in the past to a lesser degree because the mirror was not at the "optimal" angle. As the sun traveled, the reflection caused the line effect, which led me to believe it was a chemical burn at first.

If you had more butts in those chairs, you wouldn't have to worry about the burns.

Patients tend to move when they start feeling that kind of heat.
A lack of planning on your part DOES NOT constitute an emergency on mine!

    It could be worse Johns..

One day, the angle was just right as a patient was trying on her glasses, that her hair was singed! Imagine my horror as I notice her hair smoking, and reaching up to flip it behind her shoulder to get it out of the path!

Thankfully the 16yo was a good sport about it..

It did enter my mind what would happen if a pt. were there in the path of the heat.

    Wow...
