    Weekend Riddle

This is a real math problem so don't say that a bus has no legs.

There are 7 girls in a bus.
    Each girl has 7 backpacks.
In each backpack, there are 7 big cats.
For every big cat there are 7 little cats.

The bus driver is NOT on the bus.

Question: How many legs are there in the bus?

    You got it...

    14 legs on the girls,
plus 1,372 legs on the big cats (7x7x7=343x4=1,372)
plus 9,604 legs on the little cats (343x7=2401x4=9,604)
    =10,990

    10990

I did mine a bit different than Pete.

by condensening it to 8 cats per pack. 8*7=56*4legs=224legs per pack.

224legs*7packs=1568+2 legs for the girl= 1570 per girl
    1570*7=10990

    7 girls w/ 7 back packs = 49

    49 back packs x 7 big cats = 343

    343 big cats x 7 little cats = 2401

    cats have 4 legs so 4 x 2401 = 9604

    girls have 2 legs so 7 x 2 = 14

    So cats legs (9604) plus girl's legs (14) = 9618

Here's the only calculator trick I know.

Enter 12345679 (no 8), then multiply it by any small multiple of 9 (i.e 9 or 27, it works up to 81) and the result will be an endless number of the multiple.
    So if you enter:
    12345679 X 81 = 99999999999999999

1.) Two trains are facing each other 100 miles apart.
2.) At precisely the same time, one train begins traveling at 20 mph, and the other at 30 mph.
3.) At precisely the same time the trains begin moving, a fly takes off from one of them traveling 80 mph (one fast fly).
4.) The fly travels directly to the other train, turns around and flies directly back to the first train. It continues traveling back and forth between the trains until they collide.
5.) When the two trains collide, how far has the fly flown?

    :p

160 miles is absolutely correct! Combined closing speed of the trains is 50mph- so it will take them 2 hours to collide (fly traveling at 80mph would therefore go 160 miles in the time it takes the trains to collide).

    Okay, how's about this one...
A farmer is bringing a pig, a chicken, and a sack of grain home from the market. Along the way, he encounters a river and a rowboat tied to a dock.
Problem is, it is a small rowboat which can only hold him and one of his items without sinking.
To further complicate matters, the pig will eat the chicken if left alone with it, and the chicken will eat the grain if left alone with it (and neither the pig nor the chicken can swim, and the grain is not in a waterproof sack :^).

How does the farmer get all three items safely across the river?

Trip 1. Chicken there, back across with none.
Trip 2. Pig there, back across with chicken.
Trip 3. Grain there, back across empty.
Trip 4. Chicken there, and go on home.

Stop it! I have to go to bed!

    Honestants and Swindlecants

    Honestants and Swindlecants

There are two kinds of people on a mysterious island. There are the so-called "Honestants" who speak always the truth, and the others are the "Swindlecants" who always lie.
Three citizens of the island (A, B and C) are shopping at the market. A visitor to the island walks by and asks the A fellow: "Are you an Honestant or a Swindlecant?" The visitor to the island does not speak the native language and the answer from fellow A is incomprehensible. So the visitor asks B: "What did A say?" B can speak the visitor's language and he answers: "A said that he is a Swindlecant." And to that the fellow C jumps in and states: "Do not believe B, he is lying!" Who is B and C?

    Good job on the farmer...

    Regarding A, B, & C...
B is a Swindlecant, and C is an Honestant- the only one we cannot know for sure is A.

    Rationale:
1.) A is going to say he is an Honestant regardless of what he actually is (because if he is actually an Honestant, he'll truthfully say so and if he is indeed a Swindlecant he'll lie about it and say he's Honestant).
2.) Since we've established A definitely claimed to be an Honestant, B MUST be a Swindlecant (wily little fellows, those Swindlecants), and our good friend C MUST be a Honestant (and a tattletale at that).

Okay, this is one of my favorites...

He who makes it doesn't need it.
He who buys it doesn't use it.
He who uses it doesn't know it.

    What is it?
