2 teams are having a tug of war. There are 5 members on each team,
each person is pulling exactly 200 lbs.
The rope has a breaking strength of 1,500 lbs.
do they break the rope? Why or Why not?
This isn't a trick question.

I don't believe the rope would break.
Rationale being, if the rope was attached to an immovable object (say, a brick wall with an eyebolt), there would be 1,000 pounds of total pulling force (below the force necessary to break the rope).
So, if you now substitute the immovable object with another team of pullers, you realize that the total force on the rope will never exceed 1,000 pounds- if it did, one team or the other would start to "give ground." Even if you put 10 people on one team, as they drug the other team it would still only require 1,000 lbs of effort.
So, the rope would not break- but that's just a guess.
good guess Pete, you are correct, and your rationale is spot on. It seems counter-intuitive, but the force is indeed 1000 lbs, not 2000.
a good way to put it in perspective is to use a 1000 lb weight suspended from a rope, held by a team of lifters. The lifting team is pulling 1000lbs upward, the weight is pulling 1000lbs downward, yet it is understood that the stress on the rope is only equal to the weight: 1000lbs. The tug of war only changes the direction, and the stress on the rope is 1000lbs.
Pete, or anyone, have you ever heard of the Monty Hall paradox?
What a brain strain that one is. You can google it if interested.
Tom and his younger sister were fighting. Their mother was tired of the fighting, and decided to punish them by making them stand on the same piece of newspaper in such a way that they couldn't touch each other.
How did she accomplish this?

Slid a newspaper under a door and had them stand on either side?
Yuppers to both!

How about this one.
Can you draw this figure without lifting your pen from the paper?

...have you ever heard of the Monty Hall paradox?
Is that the thing about choosing door 1, 2, or 3 and then having the option to change your choice?
I think this was part of the movie- 21, and as I recall the logic behind it gave me a headache even as I was watching the movie!
use a pencil.;)
No, no. Good thinking, but whether you use a pen or pencil, the point must be in contact with the paper at all times.

OK! So we can all move on to something else:
1) draw the "1"
2) fold the paper up to meet the pen
3) on the back side of the paper, move to the right
4) move back onto the front of the paper and draw the "0"
5) fold and move again for the last "0"
6) fold paper again and move to the side
7) draw the circle around the "100"
...next?
A lack of planning on your part DOES NOT constitute an emergency on mine!
Well, you will all have to wait until Monday for a pictoral. Or I can just describe the procedure.
First, fold a section of the paper over. Then start at the bottom of the 1, continue up and over the fold, then continue in a clockwise motion to draw the 0s,making sure to close the top of the circle before going onto the overlapping fold. After drawing the two 0s, continue up over the fold, clockwise off the fold, then unfold the paper and finish your outer circle.
Voila! Easier than it sounds.

That one gave me a hangover- and I didn't even drink anything (no fair)!
Somebody please make my head stop pounding!!! :hammer:
I figured it had something to do with folding the paper, but couldn't figure it out. In the words of Inspector Closeau -"good one."
