I think some of our customers must've graduated from that class! lol :p

"For the low low price of $89.00, YOU TOO can learn how to send simple mounting jobs to the lab and waste the customer's time, put the slab line at the wrong height AND, AS A FREE BONUS GIFT, receive a set of cheap rimless mounting tools from Marchon with an instructional CD!"

Would any OD's like to respond to this one? Let's consider a new-hire. Don't forget they aren't selling this as Optician training; it is to become an optical assistant. After reading the syllabus it seems like it would be a good investment for an OD to send a new-hire to go through a program like this.

I have dealt with quite a few optical assistants that certainly could've used something like this. I am always amazed at how some offices let their front desk staff deal with patients with little or no training. :finger:

That was my take on the course. Even a little knowledge is better than none at all.

It's probably a lot more "training" than many have when entering this profession.Shoot sometimes the only requirement is to be the prescriber's relative or look good in a mini-skirt. In extreem cases one must spend threee days in the lab and read a booklet in the office for another.
Besides what is the job description of an opticians assistant, don't they just pick up after and go-fer?

I just ordered this for the High School kid that works for us. She is incredibly good in the lab, but has no idea of what goes on in the dispensary. It can't hurt her and may show her another side of this business to help her get through OD school.

I remember they had this one girl on tv a few years ago who was tricked into getting her undergrad, masters, and PHD by writing one five page paper for each of them. They gave her the certificates, she paid the money, and then she got fired for saying she had the degrees. Obviously they were not certified and the school just stole her money.

"This course is an ideal springboard for starting a career in this growing and ever-in-demand field!"

I know I really shouldn't knock this. At least they are not claiming to get you to a point where you'll be fully trained just by taking this course. And it is directed by an O.D.

Those were my thoughts exactly. (And Judy's also it would appear.)

What a great introduction to the field, to see if it's something you might want to pursue. $89? You spend more on a date!

And purchase any of the available ABO Study Guides, study for 1-3 weeks, and you too can get your ABO certification.

Yes, get the letters ABOC after your name, to qualify as a real optician.;) :hammer::hammer:

I will. I may sit in on a few of the "lectures" myself and see what it's like from my viewpoint. I'm starting to hope that it may make her reconsider going to Optometry school (I want to keep her here !!).

It may not be a bad idea, really! It seems that the more that you know and the more experience that you have in this business, the less employable that you become.. Read over a bunch of the help wanted ads in the Job Forum. I see plenty of ads asking for a person who can do everything on the face of the earth from answering the phones and insurance claim filing to frame selection and sales. Many end the ad with some experience required, or 1 year experience, etc.

This may be an ideal way for someone to enter the profession..................right after our jobs are eliminated because we know too much, get paid too much, and are too experienced!
