    New York State Continuing Ed.

What Criteria does NYS use for accepting continuing education hours? Will they accept ABO/NCLE hours from out of state as long as there is a monitor present.

I need to renew my inactive NYS license which requires a boatload of hours and obtain hours to renew my GA and SC licenses. GA and SC will pretty much accept any other state accredited hours, but will NY. Will I have to travel to NY to obtain the hours.

I am already registered for the SECO International conference in Atlanta and was hoping their hours would be acceptable to NY.

Pretty sad state of affairs, when you want 3 licenses because the economy is so bad and you need to have more than a few options open to you.

    Thanks.

My understanding of NY is that if you are licensed in another state, and that states CE requirements meet or exceed NY's, they accept that.

NY used to be I believe 18 hrs every 3 years, and most licensed states equal or exceed that. NC is 8 hrs per year.

Its been 9 years since I was in NY, but they also never made you prove that you had your CE's, it was the honor system.:bbg:

I keep NY on in-active, and just maintain my NC license.

A sad state of affairs for me personally would be going back to New York.

    This may help!

Check out the courses you take very carefully, as providers may not have all of their offerings NY approved. Also, you can do the courses on-line and free with NYSSO membership. The most expedient (but pricey) way to get the credits fast is to attend Expo East. Call the Board office - I believe there is a provision that allows you to have your license re-activated right away, and gives you a time-line for gradually getting the credits. You are only allowed 3 mail-in courses per registration period, but you can do as many on-lines as you want.

P.S. sorry about the bold text up there....can't get rid of it&$%^#
    General Information

Legislation enacted by the Legislature and the Governor in 1997 requires that ophthalmic dispensers renewing registration of a license on or after January 1, 1999 take continuing education. Ophthalmic dispensers must take 0.5 hours of approved continuing education coursework for each month of their registration (18 contact hours in a standard three-year registration period), with no more than 3 hours in study related to the dispensing and fitting of contact lenses.
Ophthalmic dispensers who are certified as contact lens practitioners must take 0.56 hours of approved continuing education coursework for each month of their registration (20 contact hours in a standard three-year registration period), with at least 10 hours in study related to the dispensing and fitting of contact lenses.
No more than three (3) hours per registration period may be in self-study courses, and no more than three (3) hours per registration period [one (1) hour per year] can be in the areas of office procedures, organizational skills and practice management.
All coursework must be taken from an approved provider.
The statute that applies to these requirements is also available here. If you need additional information, you may contact the State Board for Ophthalmic Dispensing at 518-474-3817 ext. 180 or by e-mail at odbd@mail.nysed.gov.

    SECO & NY credits

I have presented at SECO many times, and as of 2 years ago, they did not offer NY credits. But - that may have changed. Check out the brochure at the web site. That should give you the info you need.

    Sharon:

Be VERY careful with qualifying NY CEs: ONLY an approved credit by NYS is acceptable. Verbal Oks are not. This only matters, of course, if you are audited (which everyone is, eventually).

I've taken many courses that said pending NYS approval that *never* came.

    Caveat Emptor!
