    Optical Companies-Starting the slashing!

I have heard from several friends in the business about lens companies, labs, and such starting to slash jobs. Has anybody else heard this?

I wonder, if the lens companies are slashing.......that must mean that demand is drying up, which means....................I will work for food (beer)!

I hope not !! If Angel Optical starts slashing then I'll lose my job and I own the place. :( :(

I haven't heard anything yet, but it's been a while since I've seen a rep from any of them (except the guy from Essilor who tried to tell me his lenses were better than mine )

You have heard right..............this is no dream world here and what you have heard is facts, and it is sad to hear about it. Even some at lens company executive levels have been slashed.

.........so start working for soda water

    Slashing

Absolutely true!! Here in the Tampa area it is very difficult for a licensed optician to find any work at this time.

    Not to worry my friend!

There's plenty of room under the 4th Street bridge.

I've got room in my refrigerator box for one more!

    Thanks Johns!

I've been collecting bottles and cans-for cash!

I'll pick up some roadkill on the way. We kill two birds with one stone = Something to eat and we can use the hides to stay warm!

Next thing you know, labs will be recycling aluminum lap tools for cash. Oh wait.....that was me. :bbg:

    Blue Jumper No joke..................

Actually I do not think that it is nice or funny to make a joke out of it.

Looking at the amount of foreclosures and people loosing their homes and jobs these days we should not joke about it. :finger:

So what's the alternative? Sit around and wring our hands?

Is it really as if we have much control over any of it? Do you really think that Fezz and I had a hand in the Big 3 bailout? Can we affect the markets? Can we spend the country back into the black?

    No.

    Can we joke?

    Yes.

And really, I'm not joking about it. Metaphorically speaking, many of us m(myself included) may be closer to living under a bridge than we ever thought possible.

And I'll be joking all the way down.

    Think positive and do nothing

There are always possibilities and so do not throw in the towel just yet!

Our new President -elect surely will find a way to get us out of this mess!

Keep thinking! There is and always has been solutions to problems!

Just wait for the good times to return and those of you who you can do this will reap the benefits!

    Just my two cents!

That is fantastic................you are also in a region where many people always wanted to have a house and they are presently available for a lot less than a few years ago.

Hmmm . . . sounds suspicious to me. Isn't that the number of properties that John McCain owned. If we were younger and still in the wealth acquisition stage we would be buying now - not to flip but to hold for long term investment.

Keith says that the really awesome deals are long gone, but there are very good deals still out there. His market is the $175,000 to $300,000 range. We're in a fairly stable market because of the military presence here. I was uncertain when he decided to become a Realtor, but what can I say.

My nephew (a Marine) just bought a house, and said the house was only on the market for 3 days!! Wow!

It's nice to know that there are still some places out there that are selling more than just foreclosures.

I've just received some interesting feedback on my post. So let me share some thoughts with you all.

We're a (retired) military family, with all that entails. Yes, we benefit from base exchanges and health care, but balance that with packing up and moving every few years. We learned very early on that you're about as happy in this life as you want to be. You learn to make friends quickly and then to leave them quickly, so you must develop an inner happiness that moves with you and your household goods. Two of my kids did this very well, one didn't.

I could whine about the miserable wages I earned to support myself and my oldest daughter when I entered the optical field. But who hasn't had to start at the bottom at some point in their lives? I simply refused to allow myself to be miserable. I could whine about being fired or I could keep moving. I choose to look at the advantages that I have, rather that what I think I'm missing.

Indeed, my husband has sold 6 houses. To do that he works 12 hour days 6 days a week, unless he's working an open house, then it's 7 days. He turned 60 in April. I think he's earned those sales. He's on a salary, not commission and believe me, $24K doesn't go very far these days.

Do I have everything I want or think I want? No. I'd like a new TV, but the one we bought in Puerto Rico in 1983 is still working, so's the the car Keith bought in 1986.

I know times are tough out there and I know that people are hurting. But how you choose to deal with it is yours alone.

I think Chris is right, it really isn't a laughing/joking matter. It's sad. However, that being said, there is the saying, "If I don't laugh about it, I'm going to cry" I would much rather laugh than cry. But that's just me. And besides everybody handles stress in their own way.

one of the "local" labs here has cut jobs and hours, its a shame to see it, but i think it will probably get worse before better.

its a long nasty ride, laugh and enjoy the parts you can or you will never make it out alive.

Well, don't expect to laugh exactly... but you have the benefit of a new President-elect. And Obama seems like someone who has the skills and character that will enact effective change.
We ALL have to give him a chance!!
I only hope he gets the support of those that matter. If yes, then shortly you can all expect that the good old-fashioned virtues of Yankee dash and Yankee ingenuity will prevail.
Hey everyone... You (and we) have a mess on our hands/ But BOTH USAQ and Canada have the skills and savy to get us through. So stay positive, and let your new leader(s) get his bearings.
After January 20th, 2009 you can expect big-time 'CHANGE'. Keep a positive outlook and give OBAMA the time to get things right.
