    GT2 Short

Has anyone used the GT2 Short yet? If you have, what are your opinions?

Looks like a very narrow intermediate corridor. How is it compared to Hoya CD or ID??

I have a large collection of lenses which I can map. However, the vast majority of these were not given tom me by the manufacturers or people affiliated with them. This means that I cannot be sure that a lenes I have really represent the products as they are available in the market, meaning, they can have production defects or be early prototypes, etc. Moreover, comaprisons should be made on lenses having the same prescription (such as plano, add = 2.0), and I'm missing these.
That said, for the sake of freedom of infomation, I'll be willing to map and post here data of any lens sent to me by Optiboard members.

Congrats on quitting smoking. How did you quit and how bad was your habit? I was a 2 1/2 pack a day smoker before quitting cold turkey 31 years ago. I had such a bad cold and sore throat that the first week was pretty easy to not smoke. The 2nd week was worse but then it was basically over. I went from cigs to Velamints and then had to quit them.

I, as well, quit cold turkey, about 11 years ago, my wife and I quit together on new years day, an actual new year's resolution that sticked. I smoked pack and a half a day for 28 years, cowboy killers(marlboro red) Oh, health didnt improve, have gained approx 100 pounds in the 11 years hence.

I haven't used the GT2 Short. But in case anyone is interested I can give my opinion of two other short corridor progressives.

I personally wear the Definity Short and the Varilux Ellipse. I have both of them in polycarb. I love the Definity Short. Great distance, great intermediate, and decent near. I have a +2.50 add and it's not swimmy at all, very comfortable to wear. I like that it comes in Trivex and that I can put Crizal Avance on it.

I am not so thrilled with the Ellipse. The distance is good, the reading is good (perhaps a little better then the Definity), the intermediate is small but useable. But it's very swimmy, and I often very aware that I am wearing a progressive while with the Definity Short I rarely think about it.

    Just my 2 cents. :)

Are the seg heights between the Ellipse and D-Short the same?

The Ellipse is at 16 and the Definity is at 16 or 17.

    Ellipse MFH=14mm
    D-Short = 15mm

My experience is that 15mm is too short for the Definity short. I can't get a full add at 15mm. The ellipse (and it's less expensive sibling, Smallfit) work fine at 15mm. I havn't had the guts to fit one at 14mm, though.

I've fitted the Ellipse at 14mm with no trouble. The Small Fit's minimum height is 15 so I haven't gone below that.

I would love to work together to map a bunch of lenses. Perhaps we can decide on a vendor, and each hit him up for a lens in the exact same Rx same seg height, same frame shape in a variety of materials and then send them to Raanan to be mapped. That would be super cool. I have always had an interest in this and it seems that the guru from Ohio State is no longer there doing this work (cannot remember his name). Anyway, I would be very interested in that information on a variety of traditional, digital mold and digital back surface progessive lenses. I could even create a website to host the images for all to see and download at higher res than can be uploaded to OptiBoard.

Questions to be decided: What Rx, what shape and what seg height. For me, with smaller b measures these days, I would love to see a variety of lenses and their map at 15 high.

    Any takers?

    Lens Maps

    John,

You are welcome to send me lenses. I think that the best choice for Rx, for comparison purposes, is plano. You may send other Rx values.
Two point worth mentioning; 1. A web site as described in your post, has already been created and contains more than 40 lenses. See "progressive lenses revealed" thread in this forum.
    2. Prof. Sheedy is now in Pacific University (Oregon) and to the best of my knowledge, has people in his group researching issues related to PAL pefromance.

    John,

Rotlex has provided a great service by allowing me to send them lenses and mapping them. Here is the site:

    http://onlineopticianry.com/maps/

It doesn't cost anything to register and never will, you can download and compare all you want and soon I will have the comparison functionality on the site to put lenses side by side for comparison. Also if you have any lenses that meet the parameters of:

    Plano (on manufacturers suggested BC)
    Add +2.00

I am collecting another batch to send out to Raanan to have mapped, I have 3 more lenses and would like at least another 8 to 17 more.

    Harry,

How do you account for a back side digital design that includes factors such as frame shape into its design, such as the AutoII?

    A Plano / +2.00 might look quite different in a round frame with a 38B measure and a rectangle with a 28B height and a 53 width.

I don't or can't, all the lenses I have used were molded designs and have global specs factored for the above mentioned parameters, I would suspect that most the FF lenses being ordered today have global specs factored as well unless you specify the parameters or supply the frame for edge down. The maps are there to show the characteristics of the lenses design not necesarily there overall performance.
