    Calibration/axis tool for B& L 70

Does anybody have a calibration tool for setting up the axis wheels and recalibrating the reticles and table for the B & L model 70 vertometer ?

Or do you have a picture of the Guagemaster tool for doig this ?

Any other suggestions for B&L 70 parts ?

My po' man's tools for checking my lensometers over the years are a frame aligner for checking the table, ( just set it on the table, crank it up and spot the aligner). And I have a -2.00 -3.00 cr lens I spotted off a newly (GageMaster ) aligned 70 at the lab I worked at years ago ( for checking axis and OC's). This lens has been with me over 20 years!

    Gary,

Contact someone at your state society or even the OAA's guild opticians in your area and see if they have someone to service your equipment or lend you a guagemaster. I would personally never part with mine, but I would come over and calibrate or have a close friend do it. I'll post pictures tonight maybe even a scanned copy of the manual (yes I have the manual)

    GUAGEMASTER needed

I've been looking for one for years. Anybody willing to let go of theirs.

Trial lenses will work for calibrating the Vertometer. It is unlikely the axis would be off unless something got loose or someone else tried to adjust it.

Perhaps if enough people asked Younger, they could make more, they make lenses, these are a little more accurate and mounted in a block.

    R. H. Burton had some made, probably in Spain, both R. H. Burton and their Spanish source are gone.

I can provide most of the parts to repair both the Model 70 Vertometer and American Optical Lensometer. Neither instrument is supported by the original manufacture.

    guagemaster

Howard, I'll keep you in mind for parts. I have my own in office lab and would like to know lensometers are accurate and the guagemaster make it easier and faster than loose lenses.

    Best for Axis check

A sure fire way to check lensometer axis:
a bar magnifier that is rested on the frame table. No guessing there.

    Harry:

Im thought the recticle and mire axis were set referenced to the frame table (assuming not to great an error in the table's level, and no "slop")

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

Harry, that is great way to check the axis. I have made a test lens from a Maddox lens mounted in a square block to check the axis calibration.
To be sure the axis of the bar magnifier is parallel to the edge, turn the bar magnifier front to back and double check. The only way the target bar will remain sharp is if both the target bar and test bar are perfect. Any error will be doubled by reversing the test lens. Your bar magnifier is probably a higher power lens then the Gauge Master, the refractive power of the Maddox lens is higher then I can measure, this makes the Maddox lens extremely sensitive, to a fraction of a degree.
Wobble of the lens table is objectionable, but generally will not affect the axis of the table by a degree. I have checked this with a precision level mounted on a protractor.
