Would you? I mean if you could...

OK, the steel tank manufacturing plant I co-own'operate has one of those overhead lift cranes that travel along a huge piece of I beam the length and width of the main plant. Its operated by a remote wireless handheld control, and will pick up and move 10 tons as high as 30 feet. Its variable speed, but will travel horizontally about 8 mph.
Now if one were to put a safety harness on and link the pickup hook to it...well...does the name Peter Pan ring a bell?
See where I'm going with this? With a 30 foot range up and down and 200x100 feet horizontal, well..."Wendy, I can fly!!!"
Would you? I mean if you could? Sawing horns off bucking buffalo aside, I'm really tempted.
    Have a great weekend all

    Hey Dave;

Think remote control "zip line" As long as you have a spotter and it's not a day that WCB or the fire dept make a safety inspection, I say go for it. Somebody had to be the first guy to bungee jump! This could be a money maker.

My husband did that. Well, not yelling "wendy I can fly", but he rode the crane. He got in trouble for it but he says it was worth it.

Try it. Once it's perfected it could make more money than steel tanks.

I'm sure you will look way cooler than that guy windsurfing in the Florida tropical storm, right after he hit the building doing 70mph. Your 10 minutes of fame.:bbg:

Let the voice of reason speak!

    Dave,

    I WOULD NOT do it!

I think that you are asking for trouble! Imagine IF something goes wrong! What example does this show to your employees?

    Ask yourself....why?

It doesn't seem all that thrilling really.

Error on the side of caution!

But.....if you do it! Please be safe!

Sticking with the beer slide??? C'mon Fezz, you're the last one I would have thought to say, "Don't do it."

Have a pint and meet me at the crane!

You got any idea how much one of those crane's cost, or how much damage they can do. Your body is your business, but you could end up owing more money than you will ever make in liability.

Once you get older you will see this as a foolish impulse that you are glad you had the good sense not to do. Believe it or not this will happen.

Of course you could end up walking with a limp, wishing you had, had the good sense not to do this when you get older.

Go find a good woman, buy her a few drinks and the memories will be better. Usually the pain is less too (not always, but usually).

Chip, if my wife found out I had found a woman and bought her drinks, limping would be an understatement, I'n never walk or talk again. I'd be far better off doing the peter pan thing and slammin into a wall full speed.
As far as whether to do it or not, I have 2 things to say to all of you. After 500 high level freefall parachute jumps, and some rock climbing and mountaineering, flying around with a crane strikes very little fear into my heart. Whether its dignified or not, thats a judgement call, so I'll make up my mind next week when my Peter Pan outfit is back from the cleaners.

The fact that you even have a Peter Pan outfit to send to the cleaners strikes fear into my heart.

I also don't think the words "dignified" and "Peter Pan outfit" should ever be used in the same sentence.

I'm creatively think you should hang a sheet and bring water color paint with you. How you paint your "Cranesterpiece" as you fly by is up to you. This way if something does happen you can say you're an artist and were creating art so insurance will pay. ;)

(Now Chip-- say how we all pay insurance etc. etc....:))
