    Kudos to Epic Labs

I want to give some major kudos to Epic Labs in Minnesota. We couldn't find anyone locally who could make a button with 18 BO prism, so we got in touch with the people at Epic Labs through a recommendation from our own lab guy.

The job looks amazing! I've included the original instructions so you can see what the powers are. The patient is going to be tickled pink when he sees this. A bit of background: this is a LV patient with a homonymous hemianopsia as a result from a car accident. The button will act as a "side view mirror" to compensate for the field loss.

To the people at Epic, THANK YOU for your excellent work!!

Actually, the contact info just happens to be conveniently situated in the first photograph. Did Snitgirl ever tell you how particular I am with my photography?? :D

They did a very good job of a myodisc in 1.60 or 1.67 material, the Rx was about a -35.00 OU. Expensive, but good!

Well done. I'm surprised you could'nt find a local lab. Did you contact Joseph at the lens factory? Since Imperial folded their tent, it can be difficult to have good specialty work done, but it looks like you solved the problem.

? is the prism laminated to the back of the lens or is it mounted on the edges all the way flush to the front surface? Just curious.

    mshimp,
The button is fused to the lens. A hole was drilled out of the progressive lens, and then the button inserted. It's not flush to the front surface (there's too much thickness in the temporal side of the button for that), but it certainly sticks out more in the back.

    Dave,
I was pretty disappointed that no one local was even willing to try. Our main lab, Cascade, said no. KW couldn't do it, even though they did an identical type of job for us about 7 or 8 years ago. The drilling and mounting was not an issue; it was making the actual button with that much prism. It was someone at KW that mentioned Epic. I'm not familiar with the Lens Factory.

(BTW, our optician used to work at Imperial. I'll bet if he had access to the right equipment, he could have whipped up the button himself.)
