Confused Optronics Horizon III - A good edger?

I have an opportunity to purchase a used Horizon 3 with 30,000 cuts on it. I've no experience with this dry cut edger. I usually edge about 20 jobs a week in my office. Are parts available? Are they difficult to find a repairperson? Are they prone to breakage? Any help would be much appreciated.

I think they are a good machine. If you buy it take the time to run several practice lenses through it. dry cutting is different than wet cut.

    It's a Saturn NP tracer

It's a Saturn NP tracer - don't know kind of cutter motor. How do these machines block the lensees? Is it built in?

    Hi Dr B,

You need a seperate blocker, blocks, air compressor, vacuum, and all the accessories for the tracer. Make sure you get the tracer accessories because they are not easy to find.

The H3 is a very dependable and well built machine. The only problem is that it was designed before frames became so small. Dont plan on cutting below a 23 B dimension unless you have a handstone to edge it down.

The Saturn NP tracer will not allow you to do jobs with short Bs., wraps, and rectangles. unfortunately these jobs are common today. The edger will perform much better if you can pick up a 4T tracer, which are now starting to come onto the secondary market because Optronics has released the next version.

On this machine, I believe you also have to change the blade to groove.

It also does not have variable cut and feed rates, so you will have a hard time with thick poly and high index, especially if they are A/R coated...and the more oleophobic, the worse it gets.

Sounds like I am bashing the machine, but I am not. It's a great workhorse for basic frames and lenses...but if you are going to do a lot of high end jobs, I would not get it. It all depends on what you are going to do with it.

Actually the feed rates are built into the software. When you choose your material it automatically adjusts the feedrate. These settings are adjustable in the settings menu. For example, I like to set my "thick poly" material on the lowest possible feedrate, and use that for all of the high dollar coatings. It works great.

As stated above, make sure it has a bodine motor and you will need a seperate groover, and polisher. There is a polishing function but its not that great. You could get a grooving blade but having a seperate groover is the best way to go.
