Well, Harry got this ball started for Pennsylvania opticians. Now there is one for Texas. Please sign and spread the word about the site. The more signatures we get, the easier it will be for the politicians to side with common sense....Licensure for opticians in our state!

Just some friendly advice. You have a problem... lack of optician licensing.
But politicians don't want extra work. So at the same time as submitting your petition, provide a SOLUTION. Want maximum support? Don't state that you definately want a 2-year A.A.S. program, but leave it open to distance learning, internet learning, public/private colleges, etc.
But if your ego reqquires ONLY the A.A.S. program, then I suspect you are doomed to get nowhere.

Thank you for signing Alvaro (and everyone else)! And yes, I think we can make an impact with signers from other states. It shows how universally people feel opticians should be licenced.
Some may feel that because they don't live or practice in a un-licensed state that this will have no impact on them. We've already seen several states question keeping licensure for opticians. By increasing the number of states requiring licensure we strengthen our profession as a whole. United we stand, divided we fall....
There's always been talk on how un-unified or field is. Well here's our chance to show we can be. ALL opticians have a stake in this. I urge everybody to sign the Tx. and Pa. petitions. It's painless and quick. Let's all be a part of securing opticianry's future. Thanks to all!!

I'm bringing this up again because a lot of people evidently haven't seen it. Previous posts have links to sign petitions for state licensing of opticians. Please alert everyone you know on Optiboard to support this effort.
While I signed this a few weeks ago, I don't know if everyone is aware that you don't have to be a member of the state to sign the petition. We got a long way to go to reach 5000 names. Tell your friends/family and anyone else you know.

I'm bumping this up again. January is when our state legistators assemble. We plan on getting a bill introduced this session. Some of the things we have put in place...
Articals sent to local newspapers on the lack of and need for licensure for our state.
Contact with local state legislators of the reasoning for state licensure of opticians.
ROATx has (and is) compiling actual case files as tall as me of documented incorrectly made eyewear. (We have an official form to fill out and send to ROATx. Just go to http://www.roatx.org/ and click on the " Rx Analysis Form".) Every Texas optician should use this as a way of professionally analyzing eyewear made incorrectly. You can give a copy to the patient to have so they may have documented corrections that need to be re-made by the provider of the defective Rx. You then can submit a copy of the form back to ROATx for official documentation that will be presented to the powers that be in this state. (patient names are omitted by the sender as per HIPPA regs.)
And, we have our petition....
We need all your help. We're at 199 signers. Who will be #200? 300? There are some of the brightest and best in our industry that have signed. Add your name to this to at least say you care about the future of opticianry. It dosn't matter where you're from, or even if you're an optician. This is a Common sense issue. It effects everybody, but mostly, our patients.
I hope everybody that reads this and hasn't signed....Please consider doing so. Every voice matters. At the worst, you are in good company in your voiced, logical, practical and needed opinion for the good of the public to side and be heard for, licensure of opticians.

I signed and passed the info on to several Texas and Florida opticians. Keep in mind, the bottom line is to protect the public health, safety and welfare.
I suggest you have a detailed licensure PLAN with timelines for a regulatory Board that can be presented to your State officials at the same time as this petition. And it should include a 'grandfathering' clause, together with a structured Board makeup of at least five (5) public appointees and an idea of how many current Texas opticians will be affected. Some support from a few OD's, OMD's, big optical labs would help, too. Good Luck!!
I will be submitting the petition shortly and hope you will keep us up-to-date on your activities. If I may be of any assistance, please let me know. This is a needed step, not only for Texas, but for us all.
