    Marking AR coated lenses- help!

    Hi all,

All of the rimless products out there now (Titans, Airlocks, etc) seem to have one thing in common. Namely, you have to make reference marks on the lenses. However, most of the lenses we sell in these premium frames have AR coating on them.

Aside from SOLA's UTMC coating, I find it nearly impossible to find a pen that will make a mark on AR coated lenses. China markers will leave a mark, but are clumsy and inaccurate.

Any advice on what to use when marking these lenses? I suppose I could put tape over the lens and mark the tape, but...

    Wave Marking on AR

I went through a few dollars at the office supply store trying to find what you're after after several of our customers brought this up. My best results on the largest variety of AR coatings were with the good old Laundry marker that you can find all over the place. The ink must be different from most markers. It will smudge right away if you touch it, but let it sit a few minutes and you'll need acetone to remove. This should be safe for most lenses other that poly that's scratched. Hope this works on your coating of choice.

Big Smile marking Ar lenses for drilling.

    Hi Pete,
I've had good luck using a Bradford ulta fine point sharpie. It doesn't work on AR lens as well as it does on reg lens but it does work and give you a fine line.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I will try all of them and report back on the results. I'm looking forward to being able to match up to a real line and not a smeared bunch of beaded ink drops!

    Pete,

We take a grease pencil and shave it down to a really fine point using a razor blade.
