Confused Sean, Steve, Somebody HELP !!

The registry on my laptop is messed up badly, it's almost impossible to use. Is there a cheap or free (hopefully) software to correct this?? I've looked at Cnet, but I'm confused because of the number of them. Which one is the best??

If you are running XP i would try and do a system restore first. From Cnet you could try Ad-Aware or CCleaner. Let me know how you make out.

I run Registry Mechanic every week or so and it has served me well.

I use Registry Mechanic, but it's a paid app. I also use CCleaner to clean up crap on my drive and it has a Registry Cleaner in it also. And It's free and regularly updated.

Quick and dirty fix, under the Start Menu, click run, type in "msconfig" without parenthesis, press enter, go to the startup tab and start uncheckign everything in there that looks suspicious. Don't worry the startup is pretty much all stuff you don't need anything else is in other files, press apply, then eit with a restart.

You'll get an anoying popup during boot about being in slective startup but it will run cleaner and faster.

Another method is cleanign the registry manually (not for the faint of heart):

Start menu, run, type in "regedit", then you want to expand the registry keys so that you are in the following folder:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Run

    and

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ RunOnce

Anything found under these keys can be erased. What you want to do is get rid of any TSR or Terminate and Stay Residents that are bogging your system down. Many ways of doign it, the best defense is a good offense, which means new computers should be set up to monitor and remove these little boogers. Good Luck and post back if you need any help.

PS - A good disk cleanup and defrag never hurt anybody.
