Initially, yes in part, but no longer. I want to get an idea of what would work as a motivator and be productive in terms of results given thirty years of advancement followed by thirty years of seeming stagnation. I was a member of several nation organization some years ago but never active. It is in this that understanding others will help me understand myself.

Inertia, may have something to do with it, but the how in initiating forward movement is now the question. I think we have the people we just need the tools.

What does licensing actually do for you?

I don't mean this in a professional pride kind of way. I'm actually curious if licensing broadens your scope. In other words are there things that licensed opticians can do that non-licenses can't (other than get paid more).

It really helps to eliminate the less educated in our field, however as long as optician is not a protected term then an optomterists office, an ophthalmologists office, and even corporate opticals with doctors in their employ can hire and call whomever they like and optician. The term optician in essence has becoem very watered down. The dispenser on down to the guy cleaning the toilets at night can be called an optician.

It should prevent those that don't have a clue from practiceing. In reality licensure has no teeth.

I guess I'd have to ask what licensing does for any profession? It SHOULD protect the public from charlatans.

You misunderstand my question. I'm not asking about the validity of licensing or what it represents. I was asking if licensed opticians had more privileges than non-licensed.

Your question above doesn't apply because many fields don't have unlicensed individuals. You'd never see an unlicensed OD, DDS, MD, attorney etc. It would be illegal to practice without a license.

And look who's hiring the charlatans? As a primary provider of eyecare you would think that doctors would advocate the highest level of education for their staff. Many don't and then they wonder why their patients don't respect them or value their services or wares. It is the least common denominator in many an office. The doctor can have impecable skills and the most technologically advanced equipment, but the ends result is usually a numb skull fitting the prescription. I am amazed that this is called what's best for the patient. We know corporate optical reason, but doctors?

    Not licensed

    ABOC, NCLEC

Last I knew California retailers where required to have at least one licensed optician on site in oreder to dispense. Since I had my ABO I don't think I had to do much more than fill out an application, show proof of my ABO and pay a fee to be licensed.

It would not have meant I knew any more but retailers paid licensed opticians well. In the $20 and up range . . .

    The Answer

In the states that are licensed it is a crime to practice opticinary, or hold yourself out as an optician without being duly licensed.

In several states it is now a felony to dispense contacts without a license.

If the OD, MD, or LDO, is the owner of the business and on site they can delegate responsibility as they take on the full mantel of legal and professional responsibility for those they so empower.
