To polish, or not to polish?

I am using a lab that polishes all their lenses. No additional fee. High luster polish. Very nice. CR39 included. Looks so nice clear. Beautiful work.

However, I have heard that many offices prefer not have their lenses polished.

    Why?

High rx's will someties get that ring effect if they are polished. I only polish rimless and semi rimless, don't recommend it on anything over a 6.

It's not that some dispensers don't like polished edges. Some patients complain of reflections, or glare or ring effect, etc. The dispenser is trying to avoid such complaints.
Pretty isn't good if it detracts from optical usefulness.

I always ask. We don't charge extra since we just push the darn button but some people would rather not have it. I agree it increases the ring effect in a high minus and if you have a full rimless the reflections through the top of the lens in certain lighting is annoying.

I polish all rimless, semi-rimless, and poly lenses. Never once had a complaint of a ring effect. So any ring effect is minimal and probably more publicized by magazines.

I can tell you, a polished lens in a rimless or semi-rimless lens looks considerably better than unpolished. I see they white edges and cringe.

In Canada some labs do a '3/4 polish' to minimize ring efect yet have the lenses look so much better.

For high myopes, I prefer a "satin" polish. Not quite the rough finished edge, but not a high lustre either. I just tried to dispens a pair of -24.00's w/ 6D BO OU that another Optician had ordered with an edge polish. It looked horrible and the 10 year old boy was most upset. I used an edge tinting pen to hold him over while I decide on a better look.

LOL, I was waiting for Karen to chime in. :)
Yes, Collard Rose does a great job. They're the lab I use.
I have not had any complaints from patients regarding the increased reflections.
Maybe its because 80% of our lens are coated in Teflon? Don't know...

Most don't complain and it does look better on a rimless but even with Crizal or other premium coatings some people(about 5%)are sensitive to reflections through the top of a full rimless so I ask before I polish. With very high myopes a satin polish is nicer.

Did the edge polish really make that much difference? I can't imagine a -24 with 6 base out looking good either way. A thick white edge would look horrible, too. Probably a satin polish would be the best.

    Arrow

I am not a fan of High Luster Polished Edges. I prefer "Satin Edge" or what the lab I use here in Vancouver calls "Semi Edge"

Why would you spend all that money on a high-performance AR to reduce reflections only to introduce more reflections via the polished edge?
My vote is for a satin polish.

I wouldn't have. It wasn't my call. I just had to do my little tap dance at the dispensing table for the child's mother.

    no polish here

i personally think no polish looks better -

i will sometimes - run it on the wheel very lightly - to clean it up - but i hate the look of those high luster polishes -

i think tehy bring more attention to the thickness - and as for the look front the front - it creates to much reflection - no matter what the power is -

i recall 10 yrs ago - it was a big thing - but i personally don't like the appearance any longer -
    '
even on drill mts - i can not stand it -

it just looks better from the front without any polish being done -

How to fix the problem without spending money

Remove lenses from the frame, tape front and back surfaces, trim tape.
re-polish edges with wet buffing wheel and pumice flour. Leaves a satin polish finish. Be sure and run buffing wheel (preferably 4") on slow speed.

Note: If you do not have this capability, see if you can get a local dental lab to do this (watch if you can.)
