    Purposely fatiguing a transitions lens?

I have a customer who would like a light brown tint on a transitions lens. I had told him that we could dye the brown transitions but that I didn't recommend it. He suggested another route: purposely fatiguing the transitions lens under a blacklight many many times so that the neutral state is actually a light brown tint 20-30%. Granted, this would take a long time, but would it be a better option than putting the transitions lenses through a dye bath? I know neither would be recommended, but I am wondering what would be the best oiption.

If you purposely fatigue the lens, you will lose activity. So while there may be a desired colour at first, they will change far slower and not to the desired darkness.

I would go with his idea. Drop it in the tint bath for 30 seconds. You will get a very light brown and would have less of an effect on the overall operation.

First of all, Transitions lenses are several generations past the days where the substrate collected color as the lens fatigued.

As for tinting, it has to be done on the backside of the lens (Transitions come with non tintable scratch resistant hard coats). A light tint on a backside tintable hard coat should not be a problem for the lab.

Thanks for the info Jim. By the way, if it's not the collection of substrate, what accounts for the eventual darkening of the lens after 18-24 months of use?

    OpticalSLA,
    Thanks for posting.
Do you have any samples? I have not seen any color pick up on fatigued Transitions V or Next Generation lenses. On standard index lenses that are not backside hardcoated, I have seen discoloring on the exposed backside.
Quantum Transitions picked up very slight yellow, but not really noticeable until placed next to a new lens or a white paper.

I do not have any samples but I have seen a Transitions V from a customer that had taken a sheen of gray
