Personally I wouldn't buy a new edger, there are too many good used and/or rebuilt units on the market. If I were you, I would also check AIT and National Optronics. Service is the problem with all of them, it STINKS no matter which company you go with (just my opinion).
Why dont you talk to GC since you have a lemon from them.
Hi Joanne,
Give me a call, I might be able to help you out. I am in Florida too.
Thanks
We have talked to Gerber, many times since the purchase, even had them come out to talk about a new purchase and asked what they would do for us as a trade in or help since they can see the service call record. That was over a week ago and we have not heard back
We have a new (VEW) Briot Alta and the guy up the street bought the same. Both have unacceptable reliability IMHO. I would buy one of the LE7070's rebuilt from Leo for 1/3 the price of a new Alta or whatever. The funny thing is both my practice and the guy up the street were all excited about the drill, and it has been the worst part of the edger!
You know it is a bad sign when a couple of times in just one month the optician who works for your colleague/competitor is coming in begging to use your edger for a few hours, because theirs is broken....again :hammer:
Go used, go proven and buy a separate smart drill if you really need to drill.
Just my 2 cents,
John
As my location is in the UK i am not in a position to comment about after sales service but i can tell you that in my opinion the most reliable bench top edgers are without doubt the Nideks.Try a used 9000 express or the new 1000 Lex.We operate a fairly large industrial site and the Nidek edgers run 24 hours a day with very few problems. They stand up far better than all of their competitors.Hope this helps.
Buy a used Nidek.
Get A SX if you can!
Santenelli 9000. I have done much research. No National Optrinics. If I was in the market, I'd talk to OpticLabRat of the post above.
I have owned two Briot Edgers for five years and never had a problem with their service or their machines.
I have used a 9000 and a friend has just bought one, both have had axis problems anyone had this?
Alan
Joanne,
If service is your concern, and it should be, then call both Briot and santinelli and ask for a meeting with the service techs in your area.
I know both have service tech's in Florida. I am a Sales Manager and i will be the first to tell you that my service tech for my area is GOLD in my eyes. Its easy for the Salesman to say "you are not only buying a machine, your also buying me and my service".... well more over you are buying the service of the tech.... so meet with them too because they are part of the package regardless.
I wish I had some advise for you on the "lemon" curse... its like that dreaded "problem job" that keeps breaking no matter what you do... it rears its ugly head with no warning or precursors. Not comforting I know.
Good luck
We have had an Optronics 6E for 6+years min amount of trouble. Just purchased the 7E for new location, drill come out perfect. Being from the Navy lab in Yorktown VA I believe cleaning equipment daily is a must for longevity.

Call Leo from the post above. I've never bought anything larger than misc lab equipment, but I have had him refer our office to someone who got us a great retinal camera that our doctor is really pleased with and if you combined everyones praises here into one document it would be comparable to a novel such as moby dick or war and peace, thick.

Amen on buying used edgers. Since no one seems to want to support their equipment, why should anyone buy a new machine. Ironic, the new machines are extremely complex, yet there is almost no service. What happened to the days that you could buy an edger that had a life expectancy of 20 years or more. I just call Topcon for a belt for my ALE-3600 and was informed that they have no parts for this machine, they are only requirred by law to supply parts for 7 years!!! I'll certainly never buy another product with the Topcon logo on it.
Although I do not know the topcon machine, there are many places where you can find aftermarket belts that are usually better than the original. Just use the specs from your original belt.
Take a look at http://www.mcmaster.com/
You might find your belt right there.
Good Luck
You shouldn't waste your time on repairing that unit. Call Briot they have a 4 year deal going on.
I have read the final print. It looks good to me.
Dino826,
Do you have a Briot? Nevermind, I see from your post above that you have 2 units.
