Well I do not know a lot about that side of things, but there does appear to be consistency gaps. It seems like doctors are doing a great job where others are just rushing through it.

Not all fronts in the cited article, just the LASIK front.

There used to be a medical axiom that stated "never screw around with healthy tissue" and it seems that ophthalmology has stretched this principle to the breaking point. It just shows to go ya the power of the almighty buck.

I worked for an OMD in NY who said " why cut a perfectly good cornea?". Smart lady.

Back when this stuff first started they all said that but as they saw their colleagues becoming richer than God they changed their tune.

    Harry:

Lasic is anything but our profession. Our profession would be better off if no lasik ever succeeded or was ever performed. We are in the glasses business for God's sake. Other than the screw ups lasik has done nothing to enhance our profession.

Good bad or indifferent, it ain't helpin the optical business. Even if you work for an ophthalmic surgeon he ain't gonna put anything in your paycheck from his surgical fees of any kind. And you sure aren't gonna be selling more glasses if he eliminates the need.

I didn't know you refracted--now you're doing Lasik? Lasik isn't "our" industry, unless I really missed the boat on the latest ABO stuff. But that's beside the point...If you're doing Lasik in a Pearle lab, more power to ya.
    As for Lasik...
You've gotta figure, there's gonna be hyperopes who see halos at night, just with regular glasses (since it's too much time and trouble to correct them correctly). With Lasik, the changes are permanent, but they asked for it so who cares? Patients know the risks going in and the worse Lasik goes for them, the more chance we can still sell them some glasses.
If you truly want opticianry to do well, you should celebrate every failed Lasik surgery and hope contact lenses are finally proven to cause cancer while you're at it.
I love Lasik but then I hope no one ever has to wear glasses again. Someone who chooses to wear glasses rather than contacts, and posts repeatedly about how important opticians are, isn't necessarily the right person to complain about Lasik complications.
Lasik's making your earning potential go down, down, down.

We make a fair amount of money from LASIK patients. Around here all the Docs like to make you mono-vision, so we get people with a -2 in one eye and near plano in the other. I don't think I could stand mono-vision so I told the Dr. who'll eventually be doing my cataract surgery that I want as near identical vision in both eyes as possible,no mono, no accommadative. After all, I can get *****in' glasses afterwards.
So don't fear LASIK, it will increase your bottom line, especially when all these LASIK snobs reach age 40 or so.:bbg::cheers:

    Dragon:
Dem lasik snobs was gonna reach 40 or so anyway and they would need stronger more expensive glasses without lasik. Not to mention drug-store readers would not have been suitable for them.
Trust me there is not going to be any boom for the optican from lasik, even if the patient's are stupid enough to go for monovision.

I used to love lasik patients. They would flock across the border to use their high american dollar here for the treatment and then buy glasses from one of the Sunglass Huts I managed.

    hehehe...high american dollar.
