Somewhat of a theoretical question, but how can you tell when your lens polish is old/needs to be replaced?
Thanks!

When it quits working right
Gets runny, too foamy, turns color.
A true polish is aquired by breaking it down at the end of the polish and stoping the polshing at the millisecond before it dries. Use it once and discard.

If you wait until it turns color, gets foamy or quits working, you waited too long. How much does a bottle of polish cost? How much does a semi finished lens cost?
I never said we waited that long. Ours is changed quite regularly. I believe in having the lab fully prepared for the weekend. Polish is changed, tints are too, coating machine filled, etc.
Polish should be strained before recirculated through your system, we use americal plus we discard when the baume is outside of the 16 - 24 degree range. I let the polish circulate for 20 - 30 minutes and make sure it's nice and chilled around 45 degrees and then check it. Also look for any particulate in the poolish even a little and I replace the polish.

For filtering, you can use cheap nylons and attatch it with a rubberband at the end of the drain hose...
just empty it regularly, so you don't seal it up

this is common sense if you been in the business longer than 1 year.

None of it seems to stay separated for long. Every day we stir, circulate and chill the polish before use. We use Salem's Elite Supreme. Knowing my boss, it's pretty cheap stuff. It gets changed about once a month, but we are not a high volume lab. I change more often if I notice particulates. I remove the pump from the polish and clean each day to avoid corrosion. At this time I also pump some water through the lines to help prevent crusty build up.
